ACT Education Directorate 2022 Leadership Conference 1-2 of June
Paula and I recently attended the 2022 Leadership Conference. It was the first face-to-face conference in two years. The focus for the conference was on Leading for All: Every child and young person, everyone classroom, every day and was designed to enable participants to hear keynote presentations, participate in workshops, engage with panels, and be stimulated by TED-Style talks. These presentations aim to support schools implement the Future of Education Strategy. The four principals are:
- Equality
- Student Agency
- Access
- Inclusion
Hearing from our students is vital to fully understand and enact the conference themes. As a leadership team we will be working on ways we can collect student voice data and ways to implement students voices into our learning programmes and school initiatives.
Individual Learning Plans (ILPs) and Personalised Learning Plans (PLPs)
During this reporting period teachers are working with their students’ data to create, amend and update their ILPs or PLPs. During this review process we do not meet with families, however, a draft updated Plan will be sent home with your child at the beginning of next term. We encourage families to read the Plans, make any comments and return to the school. If families believe the Plan is accurate, we ask that you sign it prior to returning it back to school. If you would like further information, please contact me: erin.minehan@ed.act.edu.au
Farewell to Ms Carney
We all have very mixed feelings about this one. Nicole Carney will be finishing up at Campbell Primary School at the end of this term to move to Toyko, Japan to teach! We are incredibly sad but also so excited for the adventure that is to come for her. Nicole joined the CPS community in 2018 and has taught right across the school. Her work around our Social and Emotional Learning (SEL) over the remote learning period was vital in sustaining a remotely connected community. This involved her handwriting post cards to every Campbell Primary student from Stanley Stag. She has led the PBL committee and build/develop whole school initiatives, such as the highly sought after PBL student badges. DJ Carney will be very missed, and we look forward to hearing about all the exciting things in her future to come.
We welcome Florence Wellfair to the Year 3/4 team. Flo is joining CPS from Majura Primary School and will visit over the next couple of weeks to meet the teaching team and the lovely students in 3/4C.
Dion Drummond Indigenous Performance
On Wednesday, 8 June Campbell Preschool and Primary School students were treated to a wonderful interactive show from performer Dion Drummond. It was such a joy to finally come back together for a whole school assembly in our hall to mark Reconciliation Day 2022.
Dion is originally from Mossman, North of Cairns and is of Torres Strait Islander descent on his mother’s side, and Aboriginal from his father’s side. Dion very generously shared tales and artifacts from his cultures, teaching students about the different traditions of both Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal culture through storytelling, song and dance. Students were engaged in the show by learning a little of the language, including some songs, as well as a look at the skills of Indigenous dances. It was fantastic to see groups of students (and teachers!) up on the stage performing dances with Dion while the student body followed along. The show was incredibly engaging for all students from our youngest Preschoolers to our senior Year 6 class; a true credit to the skill and energy of Dion Drummond. We hope to see him again soon!
A huge thankyou to Mr Lawson, Ms Scott and Ms Emma from our Cultural Integrity Committee for organising this amazing visit.

North / Gungahlin Primary Regional 2022 Cross Country Championships
Up at Stromlo Forest Park on a very foggy and chilly morning on 3 June, the Campbell Primary School regional cross country team, selected at our school cross country carnival, went head to head with other schools from the inner North and Gungahlin region.
The team of around 40 students represented themselves and our school proudly and are to be commended on both their efforts and their conduct. It was great to see our school PBL values on display!
Congratulations to all of the runners and especially to Jet M, Lina M and Georgia B who finished top 10 in their respective races and were selected to represent the region at the ACT carnival held yesterday.
We are excited to hear that Jet M has again finished top 10 in his age for all of the ACT and looks likely to be invited to represent the ACT at the Nationals in Adelaide later this year. Congratulations Jet!

Last week, we acknowledged National Families Week and we participated in a range of activities across the school that were linked to the idea of family.
Students appreciated the opportunity to have a ‘uniform-free day’ on Friday and enjoyed connecting with their buddies while eating lunch together. We raised $230.50 for the Smith Family, an organisation that supports disadvantaged families by helping children participate in education. Our Year 6 Leadership Team and Community Committee selected the Smith Family as the recipient organisation for this fundraiser.
Thank you to all of our CPS families who were able to contribute a gold coin.

Term 2 Sporting Schools Wrap-Up
Week 8 has seen the final sessions of our 4 week sporting schools program delivered thanks to a successful grant from the Australian Governments’ $320 million Sporting Schools Initiative. Kindergarten and Year 1 have thrived during their month of gymnastics sessions delivered by coaches Chris and Adam from Canberra City Gymnastics Club (CCGC). The students spun, rolled, stretched, jumped and balanced their way through a range of new skills and gross motor movement and had fantastic fun to boot. We wanted to thank the CCGC team and especially Chris and Adam for such a great program delivered for a third straight year. If any families would like further information about other programs offered at CCGC you can find it here: http://canberracity.gymnastics.org.au/
While the junior students were busy learning indoors our intrepid senior crew from Year 5 and 6 were braving the icy conditions outdoors to further their AFL skill which culminated yesterday with modified game play to showcase how much they had learned. All four classes really took to the sessions and made the most of the opportunity to try something new. The skills on show were amazing as was the teamwork, communication and comradery (even a smidge of competitiveness!). Feedback from coaches Ken and Bryn and the team from AFL Canberra was very positive and they are keen to come back again in the future. We can’t wait to see if there are any budding GWS Academy contenders in our midst!

Roundabout Canberra - Jacket Drive
Dear families,
Please be reminded of the jacket drive that the school is holding for a charity, we are inviting all our students and families to participate in. We would like for you to bring old jackets that are still of quality so we can donate them to RoundAbout Canberra - a charity that can help local people in need. Winter is here now and some people may have no source of heat and need as much help as we can give them. Boxes will be set up near the front office, where they can be dropped off until the 20 June.
We need your support to help other people who need warm jackets for Canberra's Winter!
School Photographs - Wednesday 22 June
Please be reminded, next Wednesday (22 June), The School Photographer is returning to Campbell Primary School to take Class, Portrait and Sibling photos for students from Kindergarten through to Year 6.
Personalised envelopes for ordering have been sent home. It is vital that each child returns their orders in their own envelope. Envelopes are to be handed to the photographer on the day if not returned to the Front Office prior to 3pm this Friday (17 June).
Sibling photos will be taken from 8:30am till 9:00am and during recess if incomplete by 9:00am. Sibling photos are taken of brothers and sisters who attend the school only. Sibling photo orders must be placed before 8:30am 22nd June. NOTE - Online ordering for Sibling photos are closes by 8:30am on photo day
For any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact the Front Office on 6142 3580, or The School Photographer directly on 9674 9824.
Just a friendly reminder, now that we have moved in to the new build, we have ample car parks for parents who need to park and get out of their cars.
Please do not use the loading bay or the Kiss and Drop as a parking space as ACT Roads can provide you with a fine, and we do not want any of our families disadvantaged.
Please continue to be mindful of speed restrictions and remain vigilant of our little people as they rush towards awaiting carers in and around the car park.
