Dion Drummond Indigenous Performance

On Wednesday, 8 June Campbell Preschool and Primary School students were treated to a wonderful interactive show from performer Dion Drummond. It was such a joy to finally come back together for a whole school assembly in our hall to mark Reconciliation Day 2022.

Dion is originally from Mossman, North of Cairns and is of Torres Strait Islander descent on his mother’s side, and Aboriginal from his father’s side. Dion very generously shared tales and artifacts from his cultures, teaching students about the different traditions of both Torres Strait Island and Aboriginal culture through storytelling, song and dance. Students were engaged in the show by learning a little of the language, including some songs, as well as a look at the skills of Indigenous dances. It was fantastic to see groups of students (and teachers!) up on the stage performing dances with Dion while the student body followed along. The show was incredibly engaging for all students from our youngest Preschoolers to our senior Year 6 class; a true credit to the skill and energy of Dion Drummond. We hope to see him again soon!

A huge thankyou to Mr Lawson, Ms Scott and Ms Emma from our Cultural Integrity Committee for organising this amazing visit.
