As we watch our new buildings take shape it is time to reflect on our School Improvement Journey. The ACT Education Directorate engages with schools to complete a school review process to celebrate the successes and identify future directions. Campbell Primary School is scheduled for review in 2024. However, as we prepare for our new learning environments it is timely for us to consider our school purpose, vision and graduate profile to ensure they remain relevant and respond with the strategic directions of the Directorate, future focused learning, and our school communities’ beliefs. Below is our current beliefs which were created by teachers, parents and students in 2016.
Purpose:
The purpose of Campbell Primary School is learning. We develop socially, emotionally, and academically capable individuals who contribute actively to their community.

- Demonstrates positive and productive relationships among all: students, staff and parents.

Academically capable:
- know and apply the fundamentals of reading, writing and mathematics.
- confident and capable in the use of technology.
Engaged learners:
- independent and motivated life-long learners.
- demonstrate a passion for and love of learning.
- explore and experience joy in a diverse range of learning areas.
- know how to learn and assured in their ability to do so.
Problem solvers:

- confident, self-regulating, persistent, organised and resourceful.
- aware, accepting and respectful of themselves.
Sound character:

As we get closer to moving into our new building, we intend to hold forums with our community to evaluate the relevance of our existing documentation and reflect on the needs of our current community. Please review the information provided and consider attending a parent forum when advertised, so that your voice can be heard within our school community.
Rostrum
Congratulations to Sabrina for representing Campbell Primary School beautifully at the Rostrum Quarter Finals. The adjudicator commented on the exceptional quality in both the preparation and delivery of all the speeches.

2021 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey- 13 August to 3 September
Each year, the Directorate surveys all parents and carers, school staff and students in Years 4 to 12 about their experience of public education. The 2021 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey will be available online from 13 August to 3 September. The survey results will help us to continue to make quality informed decisions about how to improve our school. No personal identifying information will be provided to any school or college.
For each child in their family who attends an ACT public school, parents and carers will receive:
- An email about the parent survey, including a unique link to access the survey. Genuine survey invitation emails will have the title "The 2021 School Satisfaction & Climate Survey is now open!" and will be sent from EDU Surveys & Evaluation with 'from' address EDU@qualtrics-survey.com.
If you do not receive the survey invitation on the 13th of August, please check your Junk email folder; if it is not there, send your contact details to EDUSurveysandEvaluation@act.gov.au to request a survey invitation.
The Parents and Carers Survey will be available online in other languages: Arabic, Burmese, Chinese, Hindi, Korean, Urdu, Vietnamese, Punjabi, Bengali, Spanish and Telugu. Respondents can select their preferred language when they start the survey. A shortened paper-version of the Parents and Carers Survey is also available in the following 5 languages: Dari, Dinka, Farsi, Karen and Mon. These surveys are available at the Front Office.
For the results to reflect the opinions of our whole school community, we need as many parents and carers, staff and students as possible to complete the survey. Your feedback is important, and we hope you will take part. For more information, visit: https://www.education.act.gov.au/public-school-life/school-satisfaction-and-climate-survey

The countdown is on to Campbell Primary’s 60 year anniversary! Next Friday (13th August) students and a small number of invited guests will attend a formal assembly in the school hall. Sadly, we can not invite families to attend this event due to Covid restrictions. Families will have the opportunity to celebrate at the P&C’s Anniversary Fete on Saturday 28 August.
It has been fascinating to learn about the history of Campbell Primary School and the suburb of Campbell. Did you know that the suburb of Campbell was the first of many Canberra suburbs designed with a similar footprint, with a school and shops towards the centre and no major roads running through? When the planning for the suburb of Campbell first took place in 1951 (ten years before our school was opened) Lake Burley Griffin was still dry pasture land and Canberra’s entire population was around 15 000. After a baby boom in the local area in the late fifties and sixties, the suburb had to grow with its population, and Campbell Primary School was built in 1961. Our school houses; Hodge, Davidson, Walker and Britten are named after prominent Campbell community members in the early 1960’s.
A big thank you to the Joyce Family for loaning their book, “The Campbell Community” by Alan Foskett. It’s been a wealth of information! We are looking forward to sharing lots of stories of our school and local area’s past with students in the coming weeks.

The COVID-19 pandemic is not over. Restrictions are still in place - including in our schools - and we all need to be vigilant. This includes not sending children to school sick.
If your child has any kind of illness, even if it is just a runny nose, they must not come to school. If your child is unwell at school, you will be asked to collect them.
It is important that we limit the spread of disease during this pandemic. By doing the right thing we can help keep Canberra COVID safe.
It’s that time of year already! Posting orders are starting to roll out and the cycle of housing searches, travel plans and lots of boxes starts again for many families. Much like last year there is a level of uncertainty around what this posting season will look like, thanks to rolling border closures and lock down delays. While these things remain outside of our control there are avenues of support should the process become overwhelming.
Relocation support sessions for Campbell Primary Students relocating due to Defence Posting will take place during term 4. To minimise disruption during learning time there will be the option to attend lunchtime sessions or a 4 week after school program. Sessions include new location research, making friends, communication, what to expect, and farewell activities tailored to be age appropriate. Further details will be available soon. Please advise the school via myself or the office as soon as possible if you are relocating so that support and farewell activity planning can move forward.
On July 1st Defence Community Organisation (DCO) officially changed their name to Defence Member and Family Support (DMFS). While their name has changed, there will be no changes to the services or programs offered to ADF members and their families including relocation advice and support during times of stress. Find out more about DMFS here https://www.defence.gov.au/members-families. Defence families are encouraged to reach out to the DMFS helpline as the first point of call when requiring advice or support via phone:1800 624 608 or email Defence Member and Family Helpline. They also have several new staff on deck and are offering a range of community connection activities across the region. Stay up to date with what is on offer by subscribing to the Canberra and Surrounds ENews by emailing: DMFS.canberra@defence.gov.au
A quick reminder for those that posted in 2021 and also information for those who may be posting out for 2022, about the DFMS Education Assistance program: The programs aim is to help families address education concerns after a Defence required relocation. You can read more about the program, how to apply and eligibility requirements here. For those who may have accessed the tutoring reimbursement before the recent changes to the application process. Changes include a requirement for additional documentation including a copy of the most recent academic report from the previous school, as well as a report OR letter supporting the application from the new school. For this reason, it is a good idea to keep an electronic copy of student reports in case of relocation delay or (worse) loss in transit.
To find out more about family and community events, as well as support available you can follow them on Facebook or check out their website https://www.defence.gov.au/dco/ . I am always available if you have any questions or concerns regarding support for ADF families here in Canberra.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Hello CPS Families!
As I said in the last newsletter, we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our next batch of bronze Learner badges. The students are aware that they will receive their badge as soon as it arrives. But more importantly, the students know that the lack of a physical badge does not take away from their achievement. It is the sense of pride and self worth which is the whole driving force behind these positive behaviour changes we are seeing at Campbell and nothing can take that away from our students.
Now it is time to celebrate this fortnight’s newest recipients.
Social Emotional Learning as part of our PBL
As we wrap up our unit, Positive Coping, it’s time to share just a snippet of some of the amazing work students have been producing on this topic.
We have been having many class discussions on positive coping strategies and filling our own toolbox with a variety of strategies to work in different situations.
Next week, I will introduce you to our new topic, Problem Solving.

Whales Preschool Athletics Carnival
On Friday the 30th of July, conveniently coinciding with green and gold day, our final group of little athletes got to enjoy their mini carnival on the school oval. Benefiting from much sunnier conditions than the main school carnival, they enjoyed an obstacle course, parachute play, fun relays and fundamental throwing games. To add to the festivities, 2M, their buddy class, got to not only cheer them on but join them in a fun and active afternoon. The activity culminated with a special picnic lunch, with the option to have hotdogs like were enjoyed during the school carnival.
A special thanks goes to the parents that were able to attend, the small group of year 6 leaders who ran the individual activities (and did a fabulous job), and to the 2M team that helped with setup and pack up. An extra thankyou to the canteen team for providing the special lunch opportunity. These events take a village, and we are incredibly privileged to have such a wonderful and supportive school community. We can’t wait to see the Whales at next year's carnival as big kindy students!

Little Athletics Program for Schools (LAPS)
During the week students from years 2-6 were excited to prepare for the athletics carnival in a special visit from the Little Athletics Program for Schools (LAPS) team. The students had the opportunity to develop basic running, jumping and throwing skills by participating in highly active sessions on our oval with fully qualified Australian Track & Field Coaches.
The focus was on group participation, team morale and lots of fun activities. Our teaching staff were also given the opportunity to refresh their athletics teaching skills, while all students received a wrist band and certificate on completion. Campbell Primary chose to focus on sprints, long jump and shot put to ensure that every student had the tools to participate in our athletics carnival successfully and confidently. The result was very high participation in all events across the athletics carnival, making the house point race tighter than ever! All students are to be commended on their learning efforts and respectful behaviour across the LAPS visit.

Aussie, aussie, aussie! On Friday the 30th of August Campbell Primary School turned from a sea of black and yellow to a flood of green and gold in support of the Australian Olympic Team. The organisers put it best:
‘Green & Gold Day' is for everyone. It doesn't matter who you are, your sporting ability or your background, we believe sport has the power to unite us all. This day is about painting the country in our national colours and being proud of Australia's sporting achievements, it's about all Australians coming together and celebrating the green and gold.
Thanks everyone for getting into the spirit of the day! Oi, oi, oi!

What a week of Olympic mania it has been! Inspired by the visit to year 4 by Olympic boxer Jamie Pittman and tapping in to some of the amazing connections within our very own school community, years 5 and 6 have also had inspiring visits from former Olympians over the last week.
Year 6 were honoured to welcome school parent and Olympian Shaun Creighton who spoke to them about his experiences in the 1996 and 2000 Olympic Games, competing in the gruelling 10,000m event. An incredibly accomplished runner Shaun, also to discussed his experiences as a 3000m steeple chase competitor and marathon runner across multiple world championships and Commonwealth Games. Students enjoyed a brief rundown on the history of the Olympics as well as an insight into the dedication, resilience and perseverance required to reach the elite in sport. The visit culminated in an opportunity for students to ask questions and learn more about what the experience of being in the Australian Olympic team is like. Amazingly Shaun is still running, this time in ultra-marathon (50km plus) type events! Inspiring.

Meanwhile, Year 5 was privileged to welcome Louise Dobson on Monday this week, thanks to the “Olympics Unleashed” program. Dual Olympian (Atlanta 1996, Athens 2004) and member of the 1996 gold medal winning Hockeyroos, Louise brought a wealth of experience and knowledge to an excited Year 5 audience. Having represented Australia in more than 200 games through the 90s and beyond, Louise was a quality defender and feared penalty striker, with a long and very successful representative career that also included three Champions Trophy victories. Unfortunately, Louise was ruled out of the 2000 Olympics on home soil due to injury, while her Hockeyroo teammates successfully defended their Olympic title. Louise shared with the group the tenacity, grit and courage to work past the disappointment of missing the 2000 Olympics and returning to the elite level of her sport and the Olympic team four years later. Her inspiring message was that by setting goals, aiming high and being prepared to work hard in the face of disappointment, goals are achievable. Louise reminded us that there is something special within each and every one of us. She encouraged us all set our own goals, to “have a real go and be brave” and to remember to show gratitude to those who help us achieve our goals.
We would like to thank both Shaun and Louise for their time and for sharing their inspirational stories with our students. You have definitely generated more excitement as we follow our team in Tokoyo over the remaining weeks of the 2021 Olympics.
Keep Our Kids Safe at Sporting Events
Play by the rules when parking at ovals and sporting venues.
Parking inspectors will be patrolling local sporting events throughout the year to keep our future athletes and Olympians safe. Break the rules and you risk a fine.
Don’t park on footpaths, across driveways, no stopping zones, no parking zones, bus zones or in disabled parking spaces.
Can’t find a park? Be a sport, park legally and venture further afield.
You’ll be keeping us all safe and it will be good for your fitness too!
Please also remember to treat our parking inspectors with respect.
Like umpires on the field, they are enforcing the rules to keep us all safe. To report unsafe and illegal parking call 13 22 81 or visit Illegal parking.
