From the DSM Desk
It’s that time of year already! Posting orders are starting to roll out and the cycle of housing searches, travel plans and lots of boxes starts again for many families. Much like last year there is a level of uncertainty around what this posting season will look like, thanks to rolling border closures and lock down delays. While these things remain outside of our control there are avenues of support should the process become overwhelming.
Relocation support sessions for Campbell Primary Students relocating due to Defence Posting will take place during term 4. To minimise disruption during learning time there will be the option to attend lunchtime sessions or a 4 week after school program. Sessions include new location research, making friends, communication, what to expect, and farewell activities tailored to be age appropriate. Further details will be available soon. Please advise the school via myself or the office as soon as possible if you are relocating so that support and farewell activity planning can move forward.
On July 1st Defence Community Organisation (DCO) officially changed their name to Defence Member and Family Support (DMFS). While their name has changed, there will be no changes to the services or programs offered to ADF members and their families including relocation advice and support during times of stress. Find out more about DMFS here https://www.defence.gov.au/members-families. Defence families are encouraged to reach out to the DMFS helpline as the first point of call when requiring advice or support via phone:1800 624 608 or email Defence Member and Family Helpline. They also have several new staff on deck and are offering a range of community connection activities across the region. Stay up to date with what is on offer by subscribing to the Canberra and Surrounds ENews by emailing: DMFS.canberra@defence.gov.au
A quick reminder for those that posted in 2021 and also information for those who may be posting out for 2022, about the DFMS Education Assistance program: The programs aim is to help families address education concerns after a Defence required relocation. You can read more about the program, how to apply and eligibility requirements here. For those who may have accessed the tutoring reimbursement before the recent changes to the application process. Changes include a requirement for additional documentation including a copy of the most recent academic report from the previous school, as well as a report OR letter supporting the application from the new school. For this reason, it is a good idea to keep an electronic copy of student reports in case of relocation delay or (worse) loss in transit.
To find out more about family and community events, as well as support available you can follow them on Facebook or check out their website https://www.defence.gov.au/dco/ . I am always available if you have any questions or concerns regarding support for ADF families here in Canberra.
