Counting Down to 60 Years!

The countdown is on to Campbell Primary’s 60 year anniversary! Next Friday (13th August) students and a small number of invited guests will attend a formal assembly in the school hall. Sadly, we can not invite families to attend this event due to Covid restrictions. Families will have the opportunity to celebrate at the P&C’s Anniversary Fete on Saturday 28 August.

It has been fascinating to learn about the history of Campbell Primary School and the suburb of Campbell. Did you know that the suburb of Campbell was the first of many Canberra suburbs designed with a similar footprint, with a school and shops towards the centre and no major roads running through? When the planning for the suburb of Campbell first took place in 1951 (ten years before our school was opened) Lake Burley Griffin was still dry pasture land and Canberra’s entire population was around 15 000. After a baby boom in the local area in the late fifties and sixties, the suburb had to grow with its population, and Campbell Primary School was built in 1961. Our school houses; Hodge, Davidson, Walker and Britten are named after prominent Campbell community members in the early 1960’s.

A big thank you to the Joyce Family for loaning their book, “The Campbell Community” by Alan Foskett. It’s been a wealth of information! We are looking forward to sharing lots of stories of our school and local area’s past with students in the coming weeks.
