Planning for 2022
Term 3 is a very hectic time of year for the school as we collate enrolment data to inform our 2022 projections regarding student numbers and staffing profiles. Over the next two weeks families who have not returned their 2022 school intentions form will be contacted. If you have submitted your forms but your circumstances have changed please update this information through the school front office.
Excursions and school notes
Just a friendly reminder that if you misplace a school note you can find a replacement on our CPS DropBox. There is a tab on our website for easy access. We ask that all families support the school by returning notes by the due dates specified. This enables the school to complete necessary risk assessments, supervisions schedules, appropriate transport, and resourcing for events. Please be aware that for many events and activities late notes cannot accepted.
We would love all children to participate in the experiences offered, if you require any additional support please contact the front office to discuss with Paula Kinsman.
Congratulations!
Our students are continuously demonstrating a strong sense of motivation, dedication, and effort both inside and out of the classroom. It is always lovely to hear how our children are actively contributing to their community through their participation in the Arts, Sports, and community focused endeavours. If your child deserves a shout out in the newsletter please email paula.kinsman@ed.act.edu.au so that we can acknowledge their achievements!

Included within the overviews are all the 'Important Dates' for Term 3, it is an incredibly busy and exciting term! We will endeavour to send through reminders about our upcoming events via our other communication platforms, for example, Seesaw and Facebook.
Preschool Visit – Florey Preschool
During Week 10 of Term 2 our Preschool team visited Florey Primary School’s Preschool. The purpose of the visit was to begin to build a collaborative Preschool network and to critically reflect on our practices in the Preschool setting, with the aim of improving and meeting the needs of our community. We are looking forward to hosting the Florey Primary School’s Preschool team to share our practice as we are a very small team. We look forward to the opportunities that can come from expanding our network.
ICAS Assessment
If you are a family that has enrolled their child to complete the ICAS assessments, please see the timetable below. As previously mentioned, the assessments will take place at school, during school hours and the students will be supported by Ms Minehan or another member of our teaching staff. If your child/ren is absent during the assigned date of the assessment he/she can sit the assessment upon their return to school. All students will receive a certificate. These would normally be handed out during assembly or at Yuma, however, at this stage with COVID restrictions these are not options. I will communicate to families how the certificates will be handed out when they arrive.

As Campbell Primary’s 60 year anniversary rapidly approaches, we are asking families to bring in and share photographs, documents, maps and artefacts (or photographs of them) for us to use as a part of a historical timeline display. The display will showcase images, text and pieces of interest from each decade since the 1960’s. Think cars, fashion, technology, food and photos of our local area. We would LOVE it if you could either email images to be printed to kate.herrington@ed.act.edu.au, or lend photos and items for our display by leaving them with our lovely front office staff. If you are lending items, please make sure that they are labelled for easy returning, and be aware that they will be handled by students. This historical timeline display will not only be a wonderful way to celebrate the last 60 years of Campbell Primary, but also a rich learning opportunity for our students. We thank you for your support and are looking forward to seeing what our amazing community comes up with!
A Message From the Front Office
Notes Sent Home:
Before you ask the front office to send another copy of a note, please check the CPS website, then clicking the 'CPS Dropbox' tab and navigating to the folder titled ‘Notes sent home’. You can also find permission notes attached to the relevant dates in the school calendar – also accessible through the CPS website under ‘Our Community’ / ‘Calendar’ or through the link in the eNewsletters.
Thank you to all the families who have already returned their Enrolment Intentions for 2022 form. If you have not already done so, please assist us to anticipate enrolment numbers for 2022 by completing and returning the form below. The form is also available on the Campbell Primary School website under CPS Dropbox.
Absences:
If your child is going to be absent from school we encourage you to use the school app, SZapp. This is the most convenient and reliable way to inform the school of your childs absence. Please send emails to our school's main email address (campbellps@ed.act.edu.au) rather than individual staff members (teaching or admin). This willl ensure that you message is seen on the day. Please follow the instructions below, it is as simple as selecting "Absence" and filling in your child's details and the reason for the absence.
Early collection considerations:
If you need to collect your child from school earlier than 3:00pm, where possible, please notify the school prior to 9:30am on the day via the SZapp smartphone app (same method as submitting an absence, however, please include early pick up and the time in the description).
If you are unable to send an absence notification prior to 9:30am, please ensure you contact the school directly on 6142 3580.
We appreciate your consideration with allowing as much forward notice as possible. This helps the Front Office staff best support our teaching staff, and students, with minimum interruptions to their class time.
NAIDOC stands for National Aborigines and Islander Day Observance Committee. On Friday, we celebrated Aboriginal and Torres Stait Islander cultures. Two Year-6 school leaders, Malaki and Kobi, were our presenters; they led, guided, and supported students on the stage – thank you for your vital role in NAIDOC week. Each class shared what they had been focussing on for NAIDOC week, such as - paintings, stories, a play, re-designing the Australian flag, indigenous games, artistic designs using hands, dreamtime stories, songs, and stories using symbols to represent places, animals, and people. Thank you to everyone who contributed their time to ensure the celebration was so meaningful for students. If you are a member of the school’s Facebook page, please have a look at more photos on this site, www.facebook/campbellprimaryschoolcbr and if you should come to the front office there will be a slide show of photos that were taken. For more information about NAIDOC Week 2021 please go to the website: https://www.naidoc.org.au/
The Cultural Integrity Committee
Move over Olympians. Here comes Campbell Primary School’s super athletes! On a wet and very cold Canberra morning, students put on their coats and mustered their enthusiasm to run, jump and throw themselves into the 2021 CPS athletics carnival. Held offsite at Phillip Enclosed Oval for the very first time everyone was excited to make the most of the purpose built facilities. It was amazing to see so many students participating in every event on offer, both trying something new AND winning tonnes of points for their houses. Staff were very proud of how our CPS students represented our school yesterday, showing off not only our SCARFFF values but also our PBL values of being safe, respectful, learners.
These carnival days take a lot of people power to make them a success and we would like to acknowledge our community of parents for their contribution. We would like to particularly thank those that put their hand up to volunteer in what were very trying conditions. This was the first time in recent years that the carnival ran ahead of schedule, allowing staff to include some additional fun relays for students which were very well received. We would also like to acknowledge our canteen manager Sheree and her team of helpers for taking a special lunch offsite for the first time. The hotdogs were an extremely welcome moment of warmth in our day!
The carnival was a very big moment for our Preschool team, joining us on an excursion for the first time. They joined Kindergarten and Year 1 students for a half day of fun foundation movement activities. The following is feedback from our Preschool teachers:
Preschool enjoyed their first excursion out of Campbell Primary School yesterday. We’re not sure if they were more excited about the athletics carnival or their first bus ride together! Children enjoyed activities such as parachute, hacky sack “shot put” at bucket targets, throwing a foam-javelin and an obstacle course. Thank you to everyone involved who helped make the day such a success.
With so many race heats, so much student participation, and a truck load of house spirit, the house results, ribbon presentations and athletics team for regionals will be announced over the next few weeks. Thank you in advance for your patience.
Congratulations to all athletes on a very successful carnival.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Welcome back CPS families!
As I said in the last newsletter, we are eagerly awaiting the arrival of our next batch of bronze Learner badges. The students are aware that they will receive their badge as soon as it arrives. But more importantly the students know that the lack of a physical badge does not take away from their achievement. It is the sense of pride and self worth which is the whole driving force behind these positive behaviour changes we are seeing at Campbell and nothing can take that away from our students.
This shipment is taking a little longer as we are busily designing the final badge - the badge to trump all badges... The Stanley Stag badge! So keep an eye out for its reveal when it arrives. We want it to be perfect, so he is taking a little longer than anticipated.
Now it is time to celebrate this fortnight’s newest recipients.
Social Emotional Learning as part of our PBL
As you may recall from our last newsletter, we have been focusing on Positive Coping in SEL.
Across the school the main focus has been looking at positive coping strategies to assist in dealing with ‘big’ feelings. Each year group has had slightly different focuses, so I thought it may be better to break it down.
Kindy
This has been the beginning of looking at ‘self talk’. We have learnt about implementing the phrase ‘I think I can’ when we find something difficult. We have been examining how our body feels when we have lots of energy running through it and how it feels when we calm it down. Finally we discussed different things we can do to calm down when hit with the ‘big feelings’.
To support this learning at home, encourage your child/ren to use the “I think I can” rhyme when they feel a task is too difficult. As well as implementing positive coping strategies when their emotions are getting the best of them. Discussing these before it happens is key.
Year 1/ 2
The focus of this unit has been managing emotions. What things can we do to cheer ourselves up, calm us down, help face our fears and manage our anger.
To support this learning at home, discuss all of this with your child/ren. What works for them and what works for you. Having a checklist on display is a great visual to assist when the time comes. When the ‘big feelings’ subside, it is a good time to start helping your child/ren identify what they feel in their bodies as the feelings get big. When these ‘warning’ signs begin is the best time to use one of our coping strategies.
Year 3 /4
This topic has had students look at the intensity of emotions and have them develop their emotion vocabulary. For example, feeling upset is not the same as feeling devastated. We have looked at events which match the emotion intensity. We have reviewed some positive coping strategies, particularly when angry and how to make a proper apology.
To support this learning at home, discuss appropriate emotional language to describe our feelings and expose children to the range of vocabulary they can use to better help explain what they are feeling. Discussing this helps you better understand how they feel and what they need from you to support them. Discuss positive coping strategies for things that get tough and ask how you can support your child/ren during these times. Finally encourage them to make proper apologies at home highlighting what they are apologizing for, how it might have made the person feel, what they are committing to in the future and if there is anything they can do to help fix this situation. But most importantly, mean what you are saying. This helps develop empathy and strengthen relationships.
Year 5 /6
This is a big topic for our older students, examining self talk. We have been examining both positive and negative self-talk and the impact it has on our feelings and actions, both short and long term. We have stretched looking at ways to curve our negative self talk and look at situations with more logic and less emotion so we can handle them better.
This is such a crucial topic when it comes to our students heading into adolescence. The way we view ourselves as a person can have a huge impact on our mental health. At home, it is vital to keep the lines of communication open between you and your child/ren so they know that you are always there to help them. If you hear your child/ren using negative self talk or suspect they are using it internally, speak to them about it. Tell them how you turn our talk around, help them identify their amazing qualities and view situations (particularly with their friends) with a reasonable and logical approach so they don’t always head to a negative space.
I hope you find some of these ideas useful.
Next week I will share some work to celebrate the end of our unit on Positive Coping
Nicole Carney
On Thursday 17th July, the Year 2 students had a fantastic day at the National Zoo and Aquarium! In Term 2, we learnt about continents and countries, and wrote our own information report about an animal. Our zoo visit gave us opportunities to see our animals and learn even more animal facts. We were very fortunate to be able to hold a snake and feed some animals at the zoo with our tour guide. We visited the aquarium and saw many different sea creatures and reptiles. It was such a fantastic experience!

P&C Committee Meeting
We would like to invite all parents, guardians, community members and interested parties to join
our upcoming P&C Committee meeting!
The meeting will be held on:
Monday 2nd August 2021 from 5.30pm-7.30pm.
As well as being a great opportunity to find out about (and contribute to!) all the exciting things we have planned for the school’s 60th Birthday celebrations and get an update on other P&C activities, we will be hosting a gin tasting and providing delicious pizza to give you sustenance!
CASAC staff will provide babysitting for those of you who would like to attend but struggle with childcare at that time. Please email anna.woodhouse@campbellpandc.com if you would like to take advantage of this.
We look forward to seeing as many as you as possible there!
Campbell Primary’s 60th Birthday is fast approaching and with it: The 60th Anniversary School Fete
When: Saturday 28 August from 10.00am until 2.00pm on the school oval.
What: Lots of fun, entertainment, food and drink, with excitement such as the ADF’s tethered balloon, inflatable fun for all ages, face painting and balloon modelling, military vehicle and equipment displays, drone racing, jewellery-making and craft activities, performances and displays including a roving Army Band, martial arts and more!
We need your help to make this celebration a success, so we are now calling for volunteers – both parents and students – to help out on the day. Help will be hugely appreciated across a range of times and activities including setting up, running stalls, providing First Aid, assisting with entry and exit in line with our COVID-safe plan, pack up, and more. A link will be emailed out shortly and anyone who is keen to help will be able to sign up for a timeslot (or more than one!). Please keep an eye on your emails for this link!
We will also need donations for a cake stall on the day. We welcome all savoury or sweet creations but please be mindful that baking will not be refrigerated, so no custard or cream please. We will provide further information about drop-off points for these donations closer to the day.
Thank you in advance for getting involved in supporting Campbell Primary’s 60th birthday celebrations! If you have any questions or suggestions, please email: contact@campbellpandc.com.
Japanese News, Nihongo no nyuusu
This term is a busy one in the Japanese classroom for all year groups as we are preparing for the Japanese Assembly on Friday of Week 4. This assembly will be held on Peace Day, or Heiwa no Hi, the day that we remember the dropping of the atomic bomb on the city of Hiroshima. We are all busy folding 1000 paper cranes to present to the school for Heiwa no Hi, as they are traditionally made as a symbol of peace and longevity.
In the classroom, the students are learning to sing songs in Japanese, and will be presenting these songs at the assembly. In addition, students are learning to read and write hiragana, the Japanese phonetic syllabary.
We are of course also keeping an eye on the Olympics in Tokyo, and will be learning some action and sports words to accompany the exciting events!
Stay warm everybody, samui desu yo! (It’s cold!)
Green and Gold Day, save the date!
We're turning Australia green & gold on Friday 30th July, in support of the Australian Olympic Team.
‘Green & Gold Day’ is for everyone. The athletes, the fans, the businesses, the schools, the young, the old and everything in between. It doesn’t matter who you are, your sporting ability or your background, we believe sport has the power to unite us all.
This day is about painting the country in our national colours and being proud of Australia’s sporting achievements, it’s about all Australians coming together and celebrating the green and gold.
Campbell Primary School is getting involved with this to show our support!
Olympics Unleashed, a visit from Jamie Pittman
In the lead up to the Tokyo Olympic Games beginning this weekend, it was wonderful to hear from one of Australia’s former Olympians, Jamie Pittman. As part of the Olympics Unleashed Program, Jamie shared his journey, as a proud Indigenous athlete, to the Olympic Games and beyond with our Year 4 students.
Jamie explained that he started boxing as a form of rehabilitation when he was ten years old after falling though a window which left him with more than 50 stitches in his arm. His presentation inspired us to continue to set and achieve goals and to do our best. While Jamie had a number of huge set-backs, like missing out on Olympic selection for the Sydney Olympics and then missing out on an Olympic medal at Athens, he never gave up. Jamie’s goal now is to see the younger athletes that he coaches do their best. Jamie spoke about resilience, his favourite word. Jamie told us that he loves a challenge and left Year 4 students with added motivation to set their goals. Jamie credits his sporting success and achievements to Mrs Short, his first ever Boxing Coach, who Jamie said never gave up on him. Jamie shared a number of interesting and funny stories, including one where he received boxes and boxes of fan mail only to find out they were actually for Australian Olympic runner and hurdler, Jana Pittman! On the bright side, this embarrassing news was delivered by one of his sporting heroes, Keiren Perkins!
What did our Year 4s say about Jamie’s visit:
“I liked that Jamie Pittman was very inspiring and how he persisted to reaching his goal. I learnt to never give up on your dreams and that hard work is everything.” (Sami)
“He told us that when he lost he decided to make a program to train people for the Olympics and become a coach and that was very inspiring.”
“I liked Jamie Pittman’s back story of how he became a boxer. He was very kind and answered all of our questions. He was very funny, like the story of how he was stuck in an elevator!” (Scarlett)
“Jamie Pittman taught me that you should never give up on your dreams.” (Isobel)
Students at Campbell Primary School will be about the right age to participate in the 2032 Olympic Games in Brisbane as an athlete, coach, administrator, doctor, physiotherapist, sports scientist or a number of other roles. How exciting is this!
Dear families,
As you may know, the catalouge for Bookclub was handed out this past Tuesday. You may also have noticed a slight error in that the catalouge's date reading 2020, instead of 2021. Please know that this is only an error in typing and this is the most recent catalouge for placing book club orders.
