Building works
In each newsletter we share a brief overview of the week ahead in regard to the building works taking place. Here are some exciting pictures of the progress we have made so far on Learning Community 1: The floor plan of LC1, images taken Week 6, Term 2.

Campbell Primary School Facebook page
In some more exciting news, we are getting ready to launch our own school Facebook page. This is in response to some feedback received in the recent family survey about communication. The purpose of our Facebook page is to raise the profile of our school within the local community, as well as share information about the building works and general happenings in the school. It is not intended that it will be used as a platform for sharing information on student learning or as a means for familes to contact the school. We will not be including identifiable photographs of students on the page. You can find our Facebook page at @campbellprimaryschoolcbr – follow us for exciting updates!
eSafety – Parent/Carer live webinars
The Office of the eSafety Commissioner has released their new parent and carer webinar series: eSafety’s guide to parental controls. The webinars are designed for parents and carers of children aged four to 13 years. Participants will learn about:
- the benefits and limitations of parental controls and how to set up iOS and Android devices for safety
- how to set up popular games and apps like YouTube and Roblox safely
- using family tech agreements and other parenting strategies to manage online risks
- how eSafety can help when things go wrong.
Register for a date in June at eSafetys guide to parental controls.
COVID-19 reminder
A reminder that the COVID-19 pandemic is still with us and while many restrictions have been eased since last year, some restrictions are still in place in our school.
It is important that students stay home and get tested if they are unwell.
Visitors to our school, including parents and carers, should sign in using established processes, meet density requirements of one person per two square metres, and maintain physical distancing of 1.5m from other adults. Students and visitors also need to practice good hand and respiratory hygiene. You can find more information on COVID-19 and ACT public schools on the Education Directorate website.
Reconciliation Week
During Reconciliation Week our Cultural Integrity Committee and classroom teachers will be using the Australian Curriculum to deepen our students knowledge of Australia and place importance on The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Histories and Cultures.
School playground Equipment: Friendly reminder
Student safety is our priority at Campbell Primary School, please remember that the playground equipment is not to be used before or after school as it is unsupervised. From 3.00pm the equipment is hired by our before and after school care providers (CASAC) and should only be accessed by students attending the service and under the supervision of their educational leaders.
In August, we will be celebrating Campbell Primary’s 60 year anniversary. As we begin preparations for all of the exciting events, it’s been wonderful to connect with people who have been a part of the Campbell Community over the years. Paula Kinsman, Libby Gerner and myself are very much looking forward to meeting with Peter Jarvis, who was the principal here from 1985-1999. It will be great to hear from him how the school has changed in the last few decades!
On Friday 13th August we will be hosting a special assembly to celebrate this exciting milestone. In preparation for this event, Libby Gerner and myself are seeking stories, photographs and artefacts from Campbell Primary School and the local Campbell community from the last 60 years. If you have any items (or stories) of interest which we could borrow or photograph, please get in touch! We would love to hear from you!
If you’re somebody with a bit of creative flair, we are also on the hunt for a graphic designer who can help us out. Our hope is that a graphic designer will donate their time and skills to create a simple commemorative logo, celebrating Campbell’s 60 years. This logo will appear on a banner, commemorative items and other communications sent out to the community.

Positive Behaviour for Learning
Welcome back CPS Families!
It has been an amazing few weeks here at CPS with our PBL.
Our badges arrived a few weeks ago and the staff have been so excited awarding students with their first badges!
Our very first recipients were Milai and Vinash from 5E, and Olivia and Kaitlyn from 4S. Since then, many teachers have seen students stepping up their efforts in being a Safe Respectful Learner which has led to over 20 badges being awarded, so far with many more students not far off.
It is brilliant to see students wearing their badges with pride and the celebrations and support classmates give one another when someone receives a badge.
But more importantly, it is the changes in behaviour we are seeing that is the biggest reward, with students wanting to make good choices, even if it doesn’t necessarily mean they will receive a STAG. We are seeing the development of intrinsically motivated behaviour choices.
To celebrate, I thought I’d add a few photos of some of our proud students!

Social Emotional Learning as part of out PBL
As you may recall from week 2’s eNewsletter, we have been focusing on Personal Strengths in SEL.
In each year group, students have been learning about the difference between talents and personal traits. We have been discussing various positive characteristics, increasing our vocabulary, learning their definitions, stating characteristics we admire in others as well as where we can see them in action at school. To finish off this unit, students will identify their own personal strengths.
So, what can you do at home to support this?
Simply talking to your child/ren about the personal strengths you admire in them. Acknowledge when they use those strengths and how it’s these traits which make them, them.
You can also discuss personal strengths you discover in characters in books, movies etc as well as other people in your lives.
It is sometimes hard for us to see the positives in ourselves and much easier to see them in others. Help your child/ren to feel confident and own their positive strengths and feel proud of the person they are.
Next week I will share some work to celebrate the end of our unit on Personal Strengths.

Rostrum has been running a Primary Schools Speaking Competition for nearly 50 years for schools in the ACT and surrounding areas of New South Wales. Over the past few weeks students from Years 3 to 6 have been practising their public speaking skills and been doing a fabulous job by all accounts. Each class selected their strongest speaker/s to participate in Campbell Primary School’s Rostrum Finals, which were held last week.
Our finalist were: Emily (3B), Lina (3D), Chloe (4G), Tilly (4S), Rosie (5E), Coda (5E), Sabrina (5L), Sophie (5L), Charlotte (6S), Jaya (6S) and Hawk (6H).
The judging panel of Ms Herrington, Ms Minehan and Mr Scherer had an extremely tough decision in choosing the winner.
In the end they all agreed Sabrina (5L) confidently delivered the strongest speech and was declared the Campbell Primary School Rostrum Winner for 2021. Charlotte (6S) was awarded the runner up position.
Sabrina is now off to the quarter finals in a couple of weeks and we wish her all the best!
A massive congratulations to our finalists and to all participants in the Rostrum competition this year. Public speaking is not easy and we are so proud of all of our students for having a go and doing their best!
We were so lucky on Tuesday when Jeanette from Roundabout Canberra came to speak to our Year 6 leaders about the organisation, who they support and how they help the local community. There were some great discussions and left the leaders buzzing with many ideas for future initiatives.
Jeanette was very impressed with the young leaders and expressed her gratitude with our community's efforts in supporting their winter jacket drive.
If you haven’t heard about our donation drive, check out the details below.
Student parliament is supporting Roundabout Canberra, a local charity that supports families in need. Roundabout Canberra have a goal of gathering 500 kids winter jackets, and we would like to support them by collecting 75 from the Campbell Primary community. We want every small Canberran to have a warm winter and these jackets will help to ensure that this happens.
- What we need: children’s jackets up to size 16
- When do we need them : over the next 2 weeks
- Where can you deliver them to: drop them off to the black tub at the front office
- Our Goal is 75 jackets!
- We currently have 38 jackets!
Thank you so much to all who have donated! Let’s see if we can keep going.
On Friday 30th April Campbell Primary School staff and students came together for a whole school commemorative assembly in honour of the ANZAC tradition. It was a solemn and respectful assembly following the same order of service as a traditional dawn service. Students were respectful and reflective taking the opportunity to learn more about the traditions of the ANZACs while also paying tribute to current and former Australian and New Zealand Defence Force members, particularly those from within our own CPS community. Solely student driven, the presenters and those laying commemorative items all volunteered to assist with the assembly. Several of these students worked during their own time to write poetry or pieces on why ANZAC Day was significant to them to share with us all. We are incredibly proud of the efforts of all of the students who represented us so beautifully. We would also like to acknowledge the students who created beautiful artwork that was used to decorate the entrance to the Hall. We extend an extra special thanks to the members of the Australian Federation Guard who provided the catafalque party and also CPL Lingard our bugler from the Royal Military College Band. It is a delight to have several CPS parents representing us in their service roles on the stage on the day and serves to highlight the depth of connection that CPS has with the local military community. Though we are still limited in the number of parents that are able to attend assemblies we are grateful that the families of student presenters, many of them active service members, were able to join us as well.
A quick reminder for those who posted in in 2021, and also information for those who may be posting out for 2022, about the Defence Community Organisation (DCO) Education Assistance program. The programs aim is to help families address education concerns after a Defence required relocation. You can read more about the program, how to apply and eligibility requirements here. For those that may have accessed the tutoring reimbursement before there has been a few recent changes to the application process. This includes a requirement for additional documentation including a copy of the most recent report card from the previous school as well as a report OR letter supporting the application from the new school. As reports are not due until mid-year please either contact myself on Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.au or your teacher directly should you be proceeding with an application and we can assist with the letter of support.
Speaking of DCO, on 1st July Defence Community Organisation (DCO) will change their name to Defence Member and Family Support (DMFS). The new name reflects their vision, what they do and who they do it for. While their name is changing, there will be no changes to the services or programs offered to ADF members and their families. Find out more about the name change https://www.defence.gov.au/dco/.
To find out more about family and community events as well as support available you can follow them on facebook or check out their website https://www.defence.gov.au/dco/ . I am always available if you have any questions or concerns regarding support for ADF families here in Canberra.

This term, the students have been working together to create the beautiful KOINOBORI (fish kites) that you can see hanging in the entry to the Junior Corridor. Each student coloured in a number of fish scales, which were then attached to the fish body.
The koinobori are hung above rooftops in Japan for Kodomo No Hi, or Children's Day (May 5th) , and each fish kite represents a person in the family. To complement this unit on Children's Day celebrations, students made origami Kabuto (samurai helmets) out of newspaper and smaller origami paper. Samurai helmets are displayed on this national holiday as a symbol of strength and courage.
One class of lucky students, 3D, were able to spend a lesson learning about the traditional Japanese Clothing items and dressing up in kimono, yukata and haori. They thoroughly enjoyed helping each other dress and having their photos taken!
In Japanese class now and until the end of the term, we are learning how to talk about our family in Japanese language.

On Friday, Emily B, Year 3, and Claudia K, Year 4, will be attending the Minister’s Student Congress at Canberra College with Ms Kate Herrington. These two students were nominated by teachers to represent our school at this exciting event. The Student Congress is held twice a year and represents the wider ACT student body with the Minister for Education and Youth Affairs. This event provides an opportunity for ACT public school students to come together to discuss issues which matter to them and affect their education. The theme for this congress is ‘Creating respectful school environments’. Claudia and Emily will report back in the next newsletter to share what they learnt on the day.
As per the Important Dates within your child’s Term Overview, Kindergarten to Year 6 reports will be emailed out to families on 17th June. We will be running a test email to families on 10th June to ensure all email addresses are accurate. Dani will be in touch with families if we receive notification during the test run that an email didn’t go through.
With the colder (and wetter) seasons upon us we have decided to change our Yuma processes.
When your child arrives at school, they are asked to leave their bag outside their classroom and then make their way out to the supervised areas (oval or synthetic grass next to the junior playground).
When the bell rings at 9:00am the children will walk to their classrooms and wait for their teacher.
Yuma announcements will be made by class teachers after rolls have been completed.
We would love to continue our tradition of children jokes being shared at Yuma, so if you have any suggestions as to how that might still happen please let us know.

Call for Nominations
The new P&C Committee is excited about the year ahead and all of the activities and projects that are already in discussion.
At the conclusion of the AGM, we had not received any nominations for the position of Secretary and we agreed to go back to the school community one more time to see if there was any more interest.
We subsequently received one nomination, but if anyone else in our community is also keen on undertaking the role of Secretary, please email us on contact@campbellpandc.com by COB 2nd June 2021. You will need to include the attached Nomination form found below and submit it with your email.
If you would like more information on the role of Secretary, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Using the P&C Scholastic Rewards funds the school purchased two colourful comfortable pillows for the library. During the play breaks the children are using the pillows to relax and read with friends. They have certainly been a hit with everyone! Thank you to all the families who have purchased books through Scholastic as those purchases have funded these new pillows.
Australian Early Development Census
The 2021 AEDC data collection is now underway and Kindergarten teachers need to complete the Census for their class between 3 May and 25 June 2021.
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.
Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it is not an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole. They also found that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au.
School Banking Programs Discontinued
The Australian Capital Territory Government has decided to discontinue school banking programs in ACT government schools from 30th June 2021. As a result, the CommBank School Banking program will no longer operate at our school after the end of this term. If you are unsure of other methods of depositing to your child’s account, please feel free to contact the Bank’s general enquiries hotline on 13 2221 or alternatively visit your local CommBank branch.
We would like to thank you for your participation and support throughout the School Banking program.
Christian Education In schools
This term in Christian Education students are encouraged to wonder about some of the often-asked big questions about God and creatively present some of their thoughts and ideas.
Student attendance is with parent request only. Please use the link below and complete the form if you would like your child to participate. If you do not wish for your child to particpate then no further action is required.
Due to the ongoing building site at Campbell Primary School and Campbell Village, parking has become somewhat of a premium. This however, does not entitle people to park illegally.
Please be aware, Parking Inspectors regularly patrol the school surrounds and are issuing parking fines for illegal parking.
No parking areas include:
along Vasey Crescent from the BER carpark entrance to the corner of Chauvel is now No Parking; and
the area behind the library (near the dumpsters) is No Parking, due to trucks requiring constant access to this area.
Where possible, please do not park in the staff car park. Lendlease have very kindly sealed the overflow carpark to be more usable for our school community. Please use the overflow carpark where possible.
Public Health Alert: Death Cap Mushrooms
The growth of Death Cap mushrooms in the ACT has increased significantly with the onset of Autumn – the peak growing period. Death Cap mushrooms grow across the ACT and are easily mistaken for edible mushrooms. ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman warned the community not to touch wild mushrooms with bare hands and to keep children and animals away from them.
Any students or families who discover Death Cap Mushrooms growing on or near the Campbell Primary School grounds are asked to report their location to the Front Office or Staff as soon as possible.
Anyone who thinks they have seen a Death Cap mushroom in a public area can report it to Access Canberra on 13 22 81. Please share this advice with families. Visit ACT Health for more information about the Death Cap mushroom.
