Dear families,
It has been wonderful to see so many parents coming into the school for both learning journey and parent interviews. We hope you have enjoyed the opportunity to share in your child’s learning and engage with their classroom teacher to discuss their progress. Next term, you will receive their academic reports as another avenue of providing feedback on your child’s learning and growth. Please remember that if you have concerns you are always welcome to book an appointment with the classroom teacher or a member of the leadership team at anytime throughout the year.
Indigenous Smoking ceremony
On Thursday 25th March, Campbell Primary School student leaders and representatives participated in a smoking ceremony to cleanse and refresh the land where the construction site is taking place. We were honoured to host dignitaries including the Deputy Chief Minister Yvette Berry MLA, Aunty Violet and local Indigenous representatives and representatives from Lend Lease, The Education Directorate and Campbell Primary School.
A Smoking Ceremony is acknowledgement of starting ‘afresh’ and recognising past and future Elders and community members. The purpose of the Ceremony is to spiritually cleanse the area in which the smoking ceremony takes place, to allow peace and recognise the importance of a meeting. Cleansing the school site of the new school build allows us a fresh start as we look to the important task of educating our future generations and providing an environment that fosters a sense of nurturing and learning, not only for our children, but for our staff and the broader community.

Year 3 have hit the ground running this term with lots of positive learning experiences! We have worked as a cohort to explore the importance of rules and democracy in civics and citizenship. We have also started learning some Auslan (Australian sign language). So far we have learnt the hand shapes, finger spelling, numbers to 10 as well as some conversation words and phrases.
We are very fortunate to have had Ms Penney organise Taekwondo clinics for us and are working hard towards our first belt.
In visual arts we have been experimenting with colours from the warm and cool palettes to make abstract pictures.
In drama we have been playing lots of improvisation games such as ‘I’m a tree’ and ‘magic box’ and have focused on using a range of high, medium and low levels with our bodies to create different tableaus.
We really loved being able to share our learning across the curriculum with our special visitors last week during Learning Journeys.

Campbell Primary School Newspaper
We hope you enjoyed the first edition of the Campbell Times, produced by our newspaper club - a collection of volunteers of interested students across Year 3, 4, 5 and 6. A copy was sent home with each student today.
Thank you to Miss Ebbage for coordinating the group.
Positive Behaviour for Learning
Hi Campbell PS Families!
As this the final newsletter for the term (I know, where did the time go???) I wanted to share some of the amazing student work.
Our teachers have taught different lessons on PBL to share with their students with the focus on being Safe Respectful Learners. While every class did a similar lesson at the start of the year, teachers revisited PBL throughout the term, creating specific lessons to target undesirable behaviours appearing in the classroom.
Here is just a little taste of what they have been up to.
It is great to see and hear all the positive changes happening in our school community as we continue to promote PBL. We look forward to continuing this journey next term.
Social Emotional Learning as part of our PBL
In the last newsletter I said I would introduce you to our next topic, Personal Strengths. However, as the end of term approaches, I thought a piece on celebrating the work students have done as part of their Emotional Literacy topic was needed!
We have done a LOT of role playing, face pulling and body moving to gain a better understanding of body language. Some classes have been looking at ‘Acts of Friendship’ and how they can make the school a better place for all using empathy.
Below is just a snippet of work done this term.
I look forward to sharing more with you next term about Personal Strengths.
Enjoy the break.
Nicole Carney

On behalf of the school community, I would like to welcome Natalie Barr and Carina Kemp, as parent representatives and Fleur Forster as the staff representative, to the Campbell Primary School board.
I would also like the thank our out-going members, Leah Hanley and Emma Smallmon, for their very valuable contribution over the past 2 years.
Fiona McKellar
This term, Year 5 and Year 1 have each hosted their assembly.
The hosting cohort of assemblies has invited their families to attend, requiring an RSVP to the invitation.
Assemblies have been very well attended and it has been incredible having families on site again, celebrating the learning that is taking place.
As RSVPing to invitations is a new process, I am seeking feedback from families regarding attendance. If you have any feedback/questions, please feel free to contact me through either email (Erin.Minehan@ed.act.edu.au) or calling the front office.

Years 1, 2 and 3 Try Taekwondo!
Campbell Primary School was very excited this term to welcome back United Taekwondo in a 4 week “come and try” program for our students in Years 1 to 3.
Students have had a fantastic time improving their strength, trying new movements and techniques, learning about the discipline and respect that goes hand in hand with martial arts and self defence.
Instructor Sharon has had nothing but praise for the effort and attitude from our students in their learning. She was so impressed that she invited Chief Instructor Brett, the senior instructor in Canberra, to take a look and see if the students had progressed enough to earn their first belts!
We are very excited to announce that, so far, all students have earned their white belt with some even getting a yellow stripe! Congratulations Year 1, 2 and 3 on your special achievement.
This program was made possible thanks to the Federal Government Sporting Schools grant program and the team at United Taekwondo. Most importantly, thanks to Mrs Penney for facilitating the entire process.
If students would like to continue Taekwondo next term, please see the flyer below for options.

Thanks to a Sporting Schools grant the senior cohort of Year 5 and 6 are currently participating in a combination of the “Learn AFL” and “Experience AFL” programs here at school. Delivered across 4 x 1-hour long sessions by professional coaches students are learning the fundamentals of the game including kicking, handballing, teamwork, and fitness. They are then moving through a series of modified games focused on fun before culminating next week in modified match play. Despite this weeks’ wet weather moving the session to the hall student’s enthusiasm remains high with 2 sessions left to go over the next week. The coaches have commended both the participation and respectfulness of the 4 classes so far. It’s fantastic to see everyone having a go and learning something new.
If any students are interested in taking their AFL further local clubs are taking registrations now for all ages and competitions for the upcoming winter season. You can find more information here: https://aflcanberra.com.au/club-finder/ . Who knows the next WAFL or AFL superstar might be right here!

North Gungahlin Netball Gala Day
On Thursday 18th March, 24 very enthusiastic Year 5 and 6 netballers headed over to Lyneham Netball Centre for the Inner North Netball Gala. It was extra exciting for the students attending as it was the first gala in more than 12 months and in many cases, their first ever netball games.
The Campbell Thunder and the Campbell Storm teams, expertly mentored by Mrs Penney, Mrs Stear and Brenda Sebastian and led by Emma Sebastian and Jordie Stear from Campbell High School, played with enthusiasm coming away with a win each from the four games played. Both teams improved each and every game, displayed fair play and team spirit, were fantastic representatives for Campbell Primary and were highly commended by the organisers and other schools present.
All students should be very proud of their efforts and we look forward to seeing them on the court again very soon! A special thanks to our netball aficionado and prolific CPS volunteer Brenda Sebastian for all of her time and enthusiasm in sharing her passion for netball with our students.

Autumn SC-ORE Orienteering - Campbell kids are amazing!
This term, we saw 6 Campbell teams join the Schools Orienteering competition, with a total of 28 teams overall from schools across Canberra. We have had some brand new students join SC-ORE for the first time, and they are to be commended for their awesome efforts!
SC-ORE is a great way for students to use their brains and bodies before school, as they need to use a map to locate controls around a set area, before coming back to the start to tag their team mates. Each student carries a timing chip, called a P-Card, and uses it at each control. Being fast does not always mean that your team might do well, as you also have to be able to read the map accurately to find the correct controls.
This season, the Campbell A team has managed to hold onto third place, with some very stiff competition amidst the teams in 1st and 2nd place. Today (Thursday 25th March) marks the 4th and final SC-ORE event for the 4 week competition. We wish our Campbell kids all the best and hope they have had a great time orienteering!
A: Gretchen, Sam C, Oliver M, Olivia
B: Olivia A, Tilly, Hamish, Ella
C: Sofia, Charlotte, Euan, Malaki
D: Kaitlyn, Jiyan, Fiona, Claudia
E: Caitlyn, Isaac, Ethan, Violet
F: Jacqui, Oliver L, Nikolas, Sara
Mixed Schools Team: Ruben, Lachlan H
