Year 5/6 Shark Tank
At the end of week 5, I worked with our Year 5-6 cohorts as a Shark for their Unit of Inquiry summative Shark Tank task. The students have been working collaboratively to create an invention and then marketed their idea to a panel of Sharks (Ms Dani, Mr Scherer, and myself). The student presenters confidently spoke about their inventions and persuaded each member of the panel to invest.
This type of learning is a perfect example of ways our senior students apply deep understanding to a real-world problem. We were so proud of their innovative ideas and reflective processes.

Coffee and Crumbs
Our Year 6 school leaders have started a Coffee and Crumbs initiative. Families can purchase a lovely warm drink and sweet treat every Friday morning before Yuma. Coffee and Crumbs is a great way to develop our students' leadership skills, foster a sense of responsibility, and build a positive school culture. If you are onsite on Friday please pop across to the canteen. Thank you Year 6 and Ms J and Ms Deady for your support.

Eddie Longford - Window decals of our Curious, Connected, and Caring Values
The CPS Cultural Integrity Committee has been working with Eddie Longford. Eddie is a Wiradjuri man who is a contemporary artist, specialising in large-scale murals.

.
Eddie ran several workshops with our Year 2 and 5 students to co-design native Australian animals that represent Campbell Primary School’s values. The students identified the Emu for Curious, Wombat for Connected, and Kangaroo for Caring.
The artwork below is the final piece. Eddie has also included Mt Ainslie and Lake Burley Griffin. Families will also notice the ‘u’ shape images used at the bottom of the artwork, representing the community of CPS.
This week the artwork will be displayed using the big windows that lead up to the hall and an unveiling was organised for Friday 7. I have invited one of our 2023 Year 6 leaders, Xavier B, to participate in the unveiling. Xavier’s Year 6 leadership promise enabled our engagement with Eddie and we are so thankful for the connection, because I know that the mural will bring depth to our Values and encourage conversations about First Peoples and their cultures.
I hope all of our families have a wonderful long weekend.
Take care

North/Gungahlin Cross Country Carnival
On Friday 31 May we were very proud to have around 50 students representing Campbell Primary School at the North/Gungahlin Cross Country Carnival. You may recall that it was a very wet day, which did not deter our incredible runners, who managed to do a fantastic job on the soggy terrain.
We have a remarkable FIVE students who qualified to represent our school in the ACT Championships; Mason T, Anna-Sophia B, Anneliese B, Oliver J and Jessica W. Big congratulations to all of our cross country runners! We are immensely proud of all participants!
I would also like to say a very sincere thank you to the many families who responded to our request for a parent volunteer on the day. We are so fortunate to have such a supportive community here at CPS.
Covid -19: A Gentle Reminder
Due to a recent increase in Covid-19 cases across the ACT, we are asking families to please refrain from sending their child to school if they display any Covid-19 symptoms or signs of being unwell.
In order to protect the safety and wellbeing of staff and students, we continue to ensure that all necessary health and hygiene advice is closely followed.
Key guidelines that we ask all community members to follow include:
- Wash your hands with soap and water or use hand-sanitiser regularly throughout the day
- Practice respiratory hygiene, by coughing into your elbow or a tissue
- Place used tissues straight into the bin and wash/sanitise your hands afterwards
- Avoid touching eyes, nose, or mouth
- Not sharing food or drink
We thank families for their ongoing support with keeping our community happy and healthy.
If you would like more information about the ACT’s current Covid-19 guidelines and updates, please visit the website: https://www.covid19.act.gov.au
From the Year 6 Executive Teacher

Every Friday morning, 8:30am - 9am you can call by the canteen for a Nespresso coffee and a sweet treat to start your day.
There is even hot chocolate for the children!
At this stage it is cash only but goodies are keenly priced, so scratch up the loose change lying around the house and call by for a warm drink and a smiling hello.
We would love to see you there!
If you would like to support our fantastic students but don’t happen to be at school, donations of coffee and chocolate pods (the cheaper Woolworths Nespresso compatible brand are perfect), tea or sugar would be gratefully appreciated. We are also looking for a second coffee machine, if you have a superseded model that needs a new home please consider this great work of the students.
Do you enjoy the challenge of creating?
Do you have some spare time to assist with costumes for the musical?
We are fortunate to have secured an extensive wardrobe of costumes for our upcoming musical.
We need some support to tweak, add or adjust what we already have.
Please contact Kerry - Kerry.johnstone@ed.act.edu.au to discuss possibilities!
The musical is at the end of next term so there is plenty of time to do as little or as much as you are able.
In addition to sewing support, if it is time to clean out your sewing stash, big and small donations of fabric, pins, buttons, zips and thread are welcome not only for the musical team but for our lunchtime sewing club. So far we have made some simple soft toys and are venturing into some more complex projects like bags and clothing.
So much fun!
Curious Teachers
You will often hear the saying, ‘lifelong learners’ in the hallways at CPS and this week Ms Hollows, Ms Riebe and Ms J had the joy of being just that!
We travelled to Sydney for a 2 day conference, hosted by the QT Academy at Olympic Park (with the added thrill of being close to a sell out sporting event!).
The Quality Teaching Model is a teacher-driven framework that enables participants to analyse and improve their practice. It is supported by over 25 years of research conducted through Newcastle University and has recently been recognised by the federal government and the Ramsay Institute with funding (a lot of funding - which could be argued speaks volumes).
Inspirational keynote speakers, sharing from beginning and experienced educators, success stories presented by other schools and workshops using the framework, kept us very busy. We have come away with lots of ideas, much enthusiasm and our heads full of new information. We will ruminate on what we have learnt and look forward to sharing it with both the teaching staff and CPS community.
On Thursday, 30 May, students from Kindergarten through to Year 2 had the exciting opportunity to take part in an Australian Football League (AFL) clinic.
This clinic provided our Campbell youngsters with a fantastic introduction to the thrilling world of AFL, and best of all, it was completely free.
The focus of the session was on three key skills of AFL: catching (marking), kicking, and handballing.
Amidst plenty of smiles and laughter, there was also a fair amount of panting — AFL is indeed a highly physical sport, especially when chasing after that uniquely shaped ball. However, the highlight of the day was undoubtedly the playful banter exchanged between the children and the two coaches, discussing which teams their parents supported or who their favourite players were.
For those eager to give it another shot, there's good news: an After School Auskick program will be running from weeks 6 to 9, every Thursday on Campbell Oval. The cost is $50 for the four-week period.

On Friday, 14 June, our Year 6 leaders will be hosting a Sausage Sizzle and Jersey Day to raise funds for leadership initiatives.
Jersey Day:
Students are encouraged to wear their favourite sporting team’s jersey/their own team’s jersey and bring a gold coin donation to support our Year 6 leaders.
Sausage Sizzle:
A delicious sausage sizzle will be available at lunch for those who pre-purchase.
Orders and payments must be made at the front office by Thursday, 12 June.
Prices:
- Sausage: $3 each GF, Vegetarian and Halal options available (includes BBQ or Tomato sauce)
- Glee Sparkling Fruit Juice: $3 each
How to Order:
Please make payments and any additional donations at the front office by Thursday, 12 June.
Thank you for your support!
Warm regards,
Preschool to Kindergarten enrolments for 2025
Preschoolers will be automatically enrolled into Kindergarten for the following year where they attend preschool at their local Priority Enrolment Area (PEA) primary school or an Early Childhood School.
Campbell Primary School's PEA accommodates families who reside in Campbell, Duntroon, Pialligo, Russell, part of Majura and Parkes.
Students attending preschool outside their Priority Enrolment Area (PEA) will need to submit a new enrolment application for Kindergarten in the following year, which will be assessed under enrolment criteria. Please check with your current school if you are unsure what to do.
Regardless of where you attend preschool, as an ACT resident, your child is guaranteed a Kindergarten place at your PEA school.
Help fight the spread of illness
With winter around the corner, one of the best ways to help protect you and your family is to get the flu vaccine. It’s important to vaccinate your child as they’re at a higher risk of serious complications if they get sick and are more likely to spread it to others.
Help fight the spread of illness by staying home if you’re sick and wash your hands regularly. Please read the Winter Wellness flyer (465 kb PDF) from ACT Health or visit ACT Health Influenza (Flu) page for more information.
For security reasons, during the working week, the school buildings are locked from 3:30pm through till 8:30am the following day.
Access outside of these hours can be facilitated only if you have an pre-arranged appointment with a staff member.
The school playground can be accessed via the car park on Vasey Crescent, removing the need to walk through the school building.
