Trial of the Student-Centred School Improvement Framework
Over the past eighteen months, the Directorate and school leaders have been designing an updated fit-for-purpose school improvement and evaluation model for our system.
The Student-Centred School Improvement Framework (SCIF) will place student learning, growth, development, and success at the centre of our work.
Based on international best practices and developed in consultation with experts in school improvement, the SCIF aims to fulfil student potential by supporting schools to sustain accessible, inclusive and effective teaching and learning.
This year, eighteen schools due for external review, including ours, will be supported by the Directorate to trial selected elements of the new model to conduct improvement evaluations and plan for the next 3-5-year improvement cycle. Students, staff, and the school community will be engaged in this process.
The SCIF panel will be visiting Campbell Primary School from 22 to 23 May.
The SCIF panel visiting CPS are Kim McCormack (lead review) Stephen Gwilliam (Director of School Improvement) and Deb Lowrey (Principal from O’Connor Cooperative School).
The SCIF panel would love to meet members of our community. We will be hosting the Playgroup on Thursday 23 May, 9-10am in the Preschool playground. The School Board and members of the P&C Committee are meeting the panel during a morning tea on 23 May. Kim, Stephen, and Deb will be available after school for a chat on Thursday too.
Adam Shipp- Cultural Integrity Committee
On Wednesday 1 May, the school’s Cultural Integrity Committee met with Adam Shipp. Adam is a Wiradjuri man from the Dubbo region of NSW, who is an advocate for teaching younger generations about First Nations knowledge systems and traditional ways of caring for Country. Adam led the committee on a tour of our play areas and is developing a teaching resource that will support the teachers in better understanding our native plants and discovering the ways these plants have been and continue to be traditionally used. The Global Concept for our Unit of Inquiries is Country and the committee is looking forward to sharing Adam’s knowledge across the school.

P&C Donated Djembe Drums
Mr Lawson and the students have been so excited to welcome the class set of Djembe drums. These drums were purchased from funds raised from last year’s Colour Run. Walking about the school and hearing the drums being played is very special.
We hope they will be used to accompany the updated CPS school song that will be composed in Term 3 by our Year 6 students. The students will work with composer James Madsen to create a song that reflects our values of Curious, Connected, and Caring. For more information about James please visit: Home | James Madsen Music

Defence Student Mentor's Report
I'm Taite Gregg, and I am so pleased to be the new Defence Mentor at Campbell Primary School. Raised in a military family, I attended eight schools due to my father's 49-year army career.
I pursued a career in early childhood education, and afterward, I spent nine years working in an interior design studio in Canberra.
Now, I'm thrilled to be supporting this amazing school community in any way possible! I am employed by Campbell Primary School and funded by the Department of Defence to support students from active service Australian Defence Force (ADF) families, particularly through the challenges of frequent relocation and parental absence.
My role also includes connecting families to local community and defence support and opportunities. I am privileged to be a part of the Campbell Primary School support team that also includes our wonderful admin staff, dedicated Learning Support Assistants (LSAs), and our school psychologist.
It is my goal in the next few weeks to get into each classroom in a support role so I can get to know all students, defence or non-defence. If I see you around the school, please say "hi". I really look forward to meeting you all and learning more about the Campbell Primary community.
If you would like to contact me, below are my email and office phone number.
I work five days a week from 8:30am to 3:30pm and cannot wait to see how I can support you and your children in 2024.

Thank you to all the mothers, grandmothers, carers, students and staff who organised and supported the Mother's Day Breakfast on Monday. How wonderful to see such an impressive turnout from our community.
Our Mother's Day Stall on Tuesday was a great success. It was heartening witnessing the joy the students found in selecting the perfect gift for mum. Thank you to our wonderful Business Manager Belinda for curating the selection of gifts.

On Wednesday 1 May, our school gathered together to remember the brave ANZACs. It was a special afternoon filled with respect and gratitude for those who have served our country.
Our school leaders led the assembly, guiding us through the program with confidence and care. We watched in awe as the Australian Federation Guard showed their amazing Precision Drill. It was so impressive!
During the ceremony, we listened carefully to special guest speakers who shared stories about the ANZACs. They helped us understand why we remember them and why their courage is so important to our country.
The Campbell Primary Choir sang beautifully, filling the hall with a moving song that made us feel proud and grateful.
As we stood together, we remembered the bravery and sacrifice of the ANZACs. We promised to honor their memory by being kind, brave, and always standing up for what is right. It was a special time for our school to come together and show our appreciation for our nation's heroes.

Battle of the Coral Sea - 82nd Anniversary Commemorative Service
On Friday, 10 May our Year 4 students were given a special opportunity to represent our school, thanks to an invitation from Harriet Sutton, the president of our P&C committee.
Amelia C , Asra and Muzhda N and Austin H showcased exceptional hospitality skills as they warmly welcomed important guests, including representatives from Australia, Japan, and America. Instead of a traditional wreath, Amelia presented a captivating history book, symbolizing our enduring friendship with Japan and America. Muzhda, on the other hand, offered a beautiful posy of native flowers as a gesture of remembrance.
In a touching tribute to those who bravely fought in the historic battle of 1942, believed to have safeguarded Australia, our students gently floated fabric poppies at the Australia-American Memorial.
Once again, our students shone brightly, demonstrating immense pride and confidence in representing our school. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to everyone involved for this incredible opportunity.
Preschool to Kindergarten enrolments for 2025
Preschoolers will be automatically enrolled into Kindergarten for the following year where they attend preschool at their local Priority Enrolment Area (PEA) primary school or an Early Childhood School.
Campbell Primary School's PEA accommodates families who reside in Campbell, Duntroon, Pialligo, Russell and part of Majura.
Students attending preschool outside their Priority Enrolment Area (PEA) will need to submit a new enrolment application for kindergarten in the following year, which will be assessed under enrolment criteria. Please check with your current school if you are unsure what to do.
Regardless of where you attend preschool, you are guaranteed a Kindergarten place at your PEA school.
Thank you to all our families who have already signed up to utilise the Parent Portal. We strongly encourage all our families to create or access their ACT Government Digital Account in order to connect to The Parent Portal.
The Parent Portal is a new, secure online platform for sharing key student information between schools and parents and carers.
The Parent Portal will help streamline the everyday school administrative tasks parents and carers need to do for their children by offering a one-stop tool and minimising printed documents in its second phase.
Help fight the spread of illness
With winter around the corner, one of the best ways to help protect you and your family is to get the flu vaccine. It’s important to vaccinate your child as they’re at a higher risk of serious complications if they get sick and are more likely to spread it to others.
Help fight the spread of illness by staying home if you’re sick and wash your hands regularly. Please read the Winter Wellness flyer (465 kb PDF) from ACT Health or visit ACT Health Influenza (Flu) page for more information.
National Road Safety Week 2024 – Drive so others survive – 5-12 May 2024
Road safety is in the spotlight this week, with all Canberrans urged to take a pledge to drive so others survive as part of National Road Safety Week. This is particularly important for our younger drivers who are disproportionately represented in casualty crashes.
Driving so others survive means, obeying the speed limit, wearing a seatbelt, not driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol, driving to the conditions, and leaving the phone alone. Road safety is everyone’s responsibility, as the country works toward Vision Zero – no deaths or serious injuries on Australian roads. Share the attached colouring-in activity with students to help start a conversation about road safety. Find out more and take the pledge at National Road Safety Week.

REMINDER – Death cap mushrooms
Share through your school newsletter the Do not touch, pick or eat any wild mushrooms (24 kb Word) information sheet and remind your school community of the risks of death cap mushroom poisoning.
The ACT Health Directorate is warning schools and preschools that death cap mushrooms are growing in the ACT. They are a deadly poisonous fungus.
If death cap mushrooms are growing on your school grounds:
-
keep children and animals away
-
remove the whole mushroom using gloves or a tool, including any part under the ground
-
secure it in a plastic bag
-
place it into a rubbish bin that cannot be accessed by children, to go to landfill, and
-
wash your hands.
Also, monitor the site frequently for further growth and remove mushrooms before mowing to prevent spreading; and do not compost them.
Death cap mushrooms in public places can be reported at Fix My Street, or by calling Access Canberra on 13 22 81. More information is available at www.act.gov.au by searching death cap mushrooms, including some translated resources.
