Dear families,
Thank you to the families who completed our school survey, we appreciate that you took the time provide us with valuable feedback. We are currently working through the responses to identify areas for future improvement regarding communication, school processes and ways to rebuild and reconnect with our community. We received some very positive feedback around student learning, happiness, and safety at school as well as some areas to unpack such as reading and enrichment programs. If you completed the survey and would like to elaborate on your responses, please do not hesitate to contact the front office on 62413580 to book an appointment with me.

Year 5 and 6 students were lucky enough to go to Berry Sport and Recreation Centre for camp in week 1.
After a long bus ride, we arrived at picturesque Berry and had the opportunity to participate in some amazing activities.
First up was a trip to the river where we boarded kayaks and canoes and paddled our way downstream. Making a few stops along the way, we soaked up the beautiful scenery before racing back to the dock. Once we packed up the kayaks and canoes, those who were brave enough had a quick swim in the refreshing water.
In the evening, we formed ‘countries’ and completed a series of challenges that required team work, skill and problem solving. It was lots of fun and we certainly worked up an appetite for supper before bed.
Some of us got more sleep than others that night, but that didn’t matter once we launched into our two activities for the morning, archery and orienteering.
There was some impressive control of the bow and arrow, as well as excellent team work and map reading during these activities.
We were sad to be leaving, but really enjoyed our time at camp. It was an amazing experience that we are very grateful for.
Year 5 Adventures, from camp to space!
Year 5 has been very busy this term. First day back, we all hopped on a bus ready for our camp at Berry. Straight away the students of Year 5 were given a magnificent lunch and then we all made our way down to the creek to go kayaking and canoeing. Later that night, we had lots of fun playing games in the hall and after a quick supper of warm milk and cookies we all went to bed in our cabins.
In the morning, Year 5 got to participate in two more activities, archery and orienteering. As the Year 6’s turned up for lunch, we packed up, said our goodbyes and made our way back to school. We all had a fantastic time on our first sleepover camp and according to many students, we are all looking forward to a two night sleepover next year.
Other exciting things Year 5 have been doing this term is starting our Gold Rush enquiry unit. Very soon we will be sewing calico bags for our gold nuggets, creating clay sculptures and mining for gold across the Campbell playground. Year 5 has also been creating some amazing looking Solar Systems during science with Mrs Nguyen. We have also had our Cross Country and were very proud of the effort of all our students this year.

Campbell Primary School Cross Country
After a years’ hiatus and a postponement due to rain, Campbell Primary students finally got to put their weeks’ of running training to the test in the 2021 CPS Cross Country race. House spirit was high, as was the energy of all the runners. Almost every student from Preschool to Year 6 had a go at their event, making the house points race tighter than ever!
A big congratulations to the following students for placing 1st, 2nd and 3rd in their age category. Ribbons for these students will be handed out during Friday's Yuma and parents of the students are welcome to attend. Those families who do choose to be present will need to abide by social distancing regulations.

A big thank you to all the parent volunteers who helped make the carnival such a success. It is wonderful to be able to start coming together again as a school community and we really couldn’t do it without our wonderful army of parent and friend helpers. A very special mention goes to our Year 6 House Captains who showed exceptional leadership on the day; particularly during the Kindy, Year 1 and Preschool races. These leaders then backed up with their own event! Way to show off your SCARFFF values!
Our next big sporting event with be our Athletics Carnival in Term 3. It’s time to start training! Get your throwing, jumping, sprinting skills ready!

With the colder (and wetter) seasons upon us we have decided to change our Yuma processes.
When your child arrives at school, They are asked to leave their bag outside their classroom and then make their way out to the supervised areas (oval or synthetic grass next to the junior playground).
When the bell rings at 9:00am the children will walk to their classrooms and wait for their teacher.
Yuma announcements will be made by class teachers after rolls have been completed.
We would love to continue our tradition of children jokes being shared at Yuma, so if you have any suggestions as to how that might still happen please let us know.
As per the Important Dates within your child’s Term Overview, Kindergarten to Year 6 reports will be emailed out to families on the 17th of June. We will be running a test email to families on the 10th of June to ensure all email addresses are accurate. Dani will be in touch with families if we receive notification during the test run that an email didn’t go through.
Mothers' Day Family Event in Preschool
The Preschool team recently hosted a Mothers' Day event which involved our guests and their child creating wonderful things such as party hats, beaded bracelets, appreciation cards, flowerpots, and other craft items.
The Preschool educators taught the children songs which included some Auslan signage.
The Preschool was a hive of activity and it was so lovely to have our community back in the school.
Thank you to all those families who were able to attend.

Fresh Taste Vertical Garden in Preschool
A big thank you to Rachel Honner who, within her role as the school’s Fresh Taste representative, has worked with Bunnings to organise a vertical garden for our Preschool children. The donation from Bunnings included soil, a range of plants and herbs for the garden.
Working with their teachers, all preschool groups helped to plant the flowers and herbs and will work together to help them grow.

Having received a direct request from a group of parents, the P&C has enthusiastically agreed to fund the purchase of two new sets of decodable readers (over 800+ books!) for use across the school. This will help to provide a variety of texts for all students to participate in home reading with decodable books at their correct reading level.
The P&C is always happy to receive requests like this directly from parents, so please don't hesitate to email contact@campbellpandc.com if there is something you would like the P&C to help with.
Annual General Meeting
The P&C is holding its Annual General Meeting from 5:30pm on Thursday 13th of May. Please come along for some wine tasting, delicious food, and the chance to get involved with the P&C Committee!
During Yuma this week Susan Roberston was presented with a Campbell Primary School badge. Susan has been a volunteer at CPS for several years supporting individual students and teachers, funding Frog Watch for some classes and working within our library sorting and returning books.
We thank Susan for all her support and love having her back in the classrooms now that some of the Covid restrictions have lifted.
Roundabout Canberra, Donations Needed!
Student parliament is supporting Roundabout Canberra, a local charity that supports families in need. Roundabout Canberra have a goal of gathering 500 kids winter jackets, and we would like to support them by collecting 75 from the Campbell Primary community. We want every small Canberran to have a warm winter and these jackets will help to ensure that this happens.
- What we need: children’s jackets up to size 16
- When do we need them : over the next 2 weeks
- Where can you deliver them to: drop them off to the black tub at the front office
- Our Goal is 75 jackets!
Australian Early Development Census
The 2021 AEDC data collection is now underway and Kindergarten teachers need to complete the Census for their class between 3 May and 25 June 2021.
The AEDC gives us a national picture of the development, health and wellbeing of children in their first year of full-time school. Since 2009, the census results have helped communities, schools and governments plan services and develop better policies to target support for children and families.
Children don’t miss any class time, and parents/carers don’t need to supply schools with any new information for the census. The AEDC gives us data at a school and community level - it is not an assessment of individual children.
Some teachers have also noticed that completing the assessments made them more aware of the needs of individual children and the class as a whole. They also found that the census results are useful in planning for transitions to Year 1 and developing class programs.
Participation in the AEDC is voluntary. Parents/carers don’t need to take any action unless they choose not to include their children in the census.
To find out more about the census and how communities are using the data to help children and families visit the AEDC website: www.aedc.gov.au.
National Walk Safely to School Day
Now in its 22nd year, National Walk Safely to School Day (WSTSD) is an annual event when all Primary School children are encouraged to walk and commute safely to school. It is a community event seeking to promote Road Safety, Health, Public Transport and the Environment.
The objectives of WSTSD are:
- To encourage parents and carers to walk to school with primary school age children and reinforce safe pedestrian behaviour.
- To promote the health benefits of walking and help create regular walking habits at an early age.
- To ensure that children up to 10 years old hold an adult's hand when crossing the road.
- To help children develop the vital road-crossing skills they will need as they become mature pedestrians.
- To reduce the car dependency habits that are being created at an early age and which will be difficult to change as children become adults.
- To promote the use of Public Transport.
- To reduce the level of air pollution created by motor vehicles.
- To reduce the level of traffic congestion.
Background and Details of the Event
WSTSD is an opportunity for parents and carers of Primary School aged children to promote safe pedestrian behaviour.
WSTSD helps to inform parents and carers that they need to closely supervise their young children, particularly those under 10 years of age, in all road environments, holding hands when near or crossing the road.
WSTSD helps to promote and inform parents, carers, teachers and children of the significant physical, mental and social health benefits which can be achieved through regular walking.
The event is supported by the Australian Government, all State, Territory Governments and Local Governments.
If you can, we encourage Campbell Primary School families to take this opportunity to walk to school with your child/children and promote safe pedestrian behaviour as well as a healthy lifestyle.

Due to the ongoing building site at Campbell Primary School and Campbell Village, parking has become somewhat of a premium. This however, does not entitle people to park illegally.
Please be aware, Parking Inspectors regularly patrol the school surrounds and are issuing parking fines for illegal parking.
No parking areas include:
along Vasey Crescent from the BER carpark entrance to the corner of Chauvel is now No Parking; and
the area behind the library (near the dumpsters) is No Parking, due to trucks requiring constant access to this area.
Where possible, please do not park in the staff car park. Lendlease have very kindly sealed the overflow carpark to be more usable for our school community. Please use the overflow carpark where possible.

Public Health Alert: Death Cap Mushrooms
The growth of Death Cap mushrooms in the ACT has increased significantly with the onset of Autumn – the peak growing period. Death Cap mushrooms grow across the ACT and are easily mistaken for edible mushrooms. ACT Chief Health Officer Dr Kerryn Coleman warned the community not to touch wild mushrooms with bare hands and to keep children and animals away from them.
Any students or families who discover Death Cap Mushrooms growing on or near the Campbell Primary School grounds are asked to report their location to the Front Office or Staff as soon as possible.
Anyone who thinks they have seen a Death Cap mushroom in a public area can report it to Access Canberra on 13 22 81. Please share this advice with families. Visit ACT Health for more information about the Death Cap mushroom.
