Dear Families and Carers,
What a fantastic day at the pool we had! Thank you to all the students, staff and parents who attended. It was action packed with children entering races, team cheering and novelty events! Add a visit to the pool canteen and there was fun to be had for all that participated. One of the things that I am constantly impressed with is how the children represent the school with pride in the public arena. I was stopped by a member of the public and two CISAC staff members to be told how beautiful our children were regarding their turn taking, sharing, manners and overall conduct on the day.
I would also like to acknowledge the school community committee for all of the behind the scenes planning, processes and procedures that need to be complete when participating in water-based events.
Building Modernisation
School Modernisation Update
The formal tender process is well underway with the two companies developing their designs for our new building(s).
Representatives from the Directorate's project team and I have met several times with each company to discuss various aspects of their proposed design. Ideas collected throughout the community engagement sessions in 2018 and your feedback regarding the masterplan concepts shared last year have been considered in the briefings/discussions with each company. Due to unforeseen circumstances, the process is taking longer than expected. I will provide you with a further update (anticipated to be early in Term 2) once there is clarity around the outcome.
During the tender process all parties are bound by a confidentiality agreement. Therefore, I am unable to share any specific details with you at this time. I can say that we are working very hard to ensure the best possible outcome is achieved for our school.
Learning journeys and parent interviews
Working with parents to support student learning is a priority at Campbell Primary School. Two of the ways that we provide feedback about your child’s learning in Term 1 include:
- Learning Journey: This is a student lead and centred experience. Your child will share with you some of the learning experiences they participate in during a regular school day and showcase some work that they are proud to share. Please save the date for the morning of Tuesday 24 March.
- Parent-teacher Interviews: Parent teacher interviews are an avenue for you and the teacher to discuss your child’s progress, successes and any concerns that may arise. These conversations are extremely valuable in fostering a collaborative and supportive school-home approach to meeting the learning needs of students. Parent Interviews are conducted between 30 March – 3 April. Online interview bookings will open shortly, please book an interview with your child’s classroom teacher during their identified availabilities only.
Ms Kinsman’s Hot Read:
Holes
by Louis Sachar
A novel about a young man who is sent to a detention centre (Camp Green Lake) for a crime he did not commit. Each day the boys at Camp green Lake dig holes to build character…but…everything is not what it appears to be, and Stanley is determined to find the truth! A highly entertaining read for our older readers (Year 5 plus).
Mathematics Challenge
Each day we add, subtract, multiply or divide numbers when in school, work and just going about our daily life. But have you ever thought deeply about multiplication?
My challenge to you is to look at the nine times tables. Can you notice some interesting patterns? What have you discovered? Let me know by popping your submissions in the notes box in the front office.
Writing Challenge
I was so excited to receive some great stories on the Adventures of Millie! Thank you for sharing them, here are the first two that were delivered.
It has been a busy and exciting start to the year. The Campbell Primary School Swimming Carnival was held on Friday 28th February. It was wonderful to see so many people participating in lots of races to achieve points for their houses. It was also great to hear people cheering for students from their houses. Thank you so much to the teachers and parents who made the day so enjoyable.
You may have noticed there are new recycling bins around the school in order to specifically collect 10 cent recyclable items such as juice poppers and milk cartons. Over the past few weeks we have prevented over 330 items from going to landfill and therefore we raised $33.00. Unfortunately, we are still finding a lot of these items in the normal bins. When you order a 10 cent recyclable item from the canteen, a green stamp which says ‘please recycle’ will be on your order bag to help you remember to put items in the correct bin. Wouldn’t it be great if ALL the recyclable items from our next special lunch were put in the correct bins for recycling?
The weather was against us at the Enlighten Festival for our cupcake stall, but on Saturday the Corroboree Little Athletics Club and Campbell IGA allowed us to set up shop again. We raised over $900 for future student leader opportunities. We were also able to share some of the baked goods with the Samaritan Homeless Shelter in Hackett. The support the school leaders were given towards the Enlighten cupcake stall last Friday was incredible with so many beautiful cupcakes being delivered on Friday morning. A huge thanks to all those wonderful families who baked. Please collect your containers from the front office at your earliest convenience.

We are very excited to announce that Campbell Primary School has been successful in applying for a “Saluting Their Service” Commemorative Grant from DVA. The grant will hopefully allow us to commission a local artist to design and deliver a commemorative outdoor mural near our relocated flagpoles at the back of the hall.
Campbell Primary School has a long and proud association with the Canberra ADF community, in particular with our neighbours at Duntroon. Given our proximity to ADFA, RMC, Russell Offices and of course the Australian War Memorial this is a wonderful opportunity for an acknowledgement of, and tribute to, the sacrifice of all those that have served.
We are now appealing to our wonderful (and talented) Campbell Primary School community, particularly those that are artists or are well connected in the local art community. The parameters are broad at this stage. Ideally we would like the mural to represent all 3 services, tie back to Campbell Primary School in some way, be of a professional standard, low maintenance and long lasting. The mural must have a commemorative theme and should be suitable as a backdrop to both ANZAC and Remembrance Day activities.
If you think you may be interested, or know someone who is please contact the Defence School Mentor directly at Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.au . Where multiple proposals are received the successful applicant will be chosen by our Executive team or by student vote.
Below are a few examples of community and school murals for inspiration.

On behalf of the Australian Koala Foundation (AKF) we are writing to thank you for your recent donation towards our work. Campbell Primary School's efforts managed to raise over $1,200.00 for AKF.
Your donation allows us to carry on our work and speak freely for the Koala – our Aussie icon.

CommBank’s School Banking Program is intended to develop good saving skills for children.
A CommBank Youth Saver account, designed for anyone under 18 years of age, has no monthly or withdrawal fees, and pays bonus interest when there is at least one deposit and no withdrawals per month (on balances up to $50,000).
You can open a Youth Saver account at any CommBank branch, through the CommBank app (if you have a CommBank account) or online at commbank.com.au/schoolbanking. Your child will then be provided a Dollarmites deposit wallet, which can be used to make regular deposits through the school banking system. Campbell’s School Banking day is Thursday.
You'll notice there's a new banking deposit box, thanks to the generosity of the Burney family.
For every 10 deposits that are made children can claim a reward, with new rewards available each term -
Term One: Terry Denton’s Activity Book or Mini Soccer Ball
Term Two: Treetop Stationery Set or Treetop Handball
Term Three: Tomato Seed Kit or Magic Mist Drink Bottle
Term Four: Emoji Wallet or Snakes & Ladders Game
The school also earns rewards for each child involved in the program - so you can assist the school community whilst teaching your children important finance lessons.
