Dear Families,
Welcome to the NEW LOOK newsletter and school calendar. We still have our training wheels on but are quickly learning how to use the online platform to bring you timely and up to date communications and services. This platform will, in time, enable us to link the Newsletter, coming events calendar (formerly the What’s Happening) and excursion notes. We strongly encourage all families to read the newsletter and view the calendar regularly as it often has important information on upcoming events at Campbell Primary School.
Please be patient as we roll out the new system and learn how to use all the wonderful capabilities the platform offers.
Northside Spectacular
Wishing our students all the best for their performances in the Northside Spectacular being held on Wednesday and Thursday night. I am looking forward to watching them on Thursday and would like to thank Peter Lawson, Emma Smallmon and Kylie Cheater for all the behind the scenes preparation that goes into participating in these wonderful opportunities.
Tickets may still be available through the following link: https://www.trybooking.com/BFTUR
Writing at Campbell Primary School
Over the last few weeks I have had the pleasure of students sharing their wonderful writing with me.
I would like to congratulate:
Thomas P (Year 6) who entered the Just Keep Writing 2019 (Write4fun) competition and had his action packed, heart stopping story “Assassination” published.
We are looking forward to hearing how Charlotte W's (Year 1) story ‘Above the Sun’ (Year 1) goes in the 2019 News Short Story Competition. It was very exciting to read her story about an adventurous baby bat called Sun-Dancer!
I would also like to acknowledge the written work of year 5 students from 5S. Recently they completed a quick write which is a short-written response to a prompt, provocation or open-ended question. Their prompt was ‘The Snowman’.
The Snowman Friend
Written by Emily
Bright and brainy,
always smiling, I hope my fun will go on.
A soft sappy heart always welcome to new friends,
I will never find a sole like you
my friend Snowman.
What I see is not what I think,
shining blue eyes looking at me
I soar across the inky black sky with my friend
The Snowman.
My friend and I always together,
near or far friends forever,
Oh my friend,
Snowman.
The Show
Written by Billie
The snowmen all part to make way for us,
And my snowman and I walk through.
They are all staring and looking at us,
Their noses shining brightly too,
Santa is there as small as can be,
With his jolly aroma in the air,
Then we all dance and I can see,
The happiness everywhere
Now everyone is twirling
And jumping around,
Look! Everyone is swirling
And feeling the sound
I am so happy,
I don’t want to go,
But then off we spin,
Flying above the show
The Snowman
Written by Riley S
Cold was the night. My head was spinning, and I just couldn’t get my mind off something. Earlier today I had made the best snowman I had ever laid my eyes on. He was an astonishing creation. He was 7 feet tall towering over my head. I had used an old rag for a scarf and coal for his eyes and buttons. His kind figure urged for something. What was it that he pleaded for so badly? An idea sparked in my head and I knew what he craved. He wanted a mouth! I curved my finger across his kind face to make a lovely smile.
The Snowman
Written by Henry W
As I fiddle around in my bed I try to go to sleep but an inpatient urge forces me to go downstairs. I seize my dressing gown as hard as I can to pump heat into me. As I tiptoe downstairs as quietly as I possibly can, I see the grandfather clock ticks on to 12 o clock. The old door with the rusty handle barely moves as I open it. Beams come out of the snowman as positive colours and he turns around with his arms wide open. I sprint and jump in the most joyful way as I hug him and love spreads inside me.
The Snowman
Written by Perry
I wake up, my warm breath heating the air in front of my face. Quickly, I climb out of my warm sheets and rush to the window. The ground outside is laden with thick snow, the leaves of many trees obscured by the same soft snow covering the wide valley outside my frosted window. The soft crunching of a figure is audible outside. Although I can’t see the creature, I gather it is no threat considering the friendly tone of it’s footsteps. I press my face to the cold window, my breath clouding up the glass. A faint shadow is visible, ghosting around the bricks that form the sharp corner of the house. As the shadow pauses, I notice it is as long as a tree is tall. Moving once more, the creature’s white legs are barely visible against the snow; both are the same colour. The creature is now in the open. . It appears to be the height of a full-grown man. This is no creature. It is a snowman and it’s alive.
Building Modernisation
In last week’s newsletter it was announced that Master Plan 2 (double storey) had been identified as the preferred build. The Directorate has shortlisted two companies who will develop their design as part of the formal tender process. It is anticipated that this process will be finalised in early 2020. Once the contract is awarded, there will be further opportunities to provide input to the detailed design of the new building(s). Below is the proposed timeline of progress and a link to the website which is being updated as new information becomes available.

Writing Enrichment Excursion
On the 28th October Enrichment students from Years 1-6 visited the National Museum of Australia - Dreamworlds Animation exhibit. The students were led by an educator from the Museum who shared with the student’s multimodal examples of storytelling. A very big thank you to the P&C who very generously contributed to some of the costs of this excursion. Our students (and their supervising teachers) were very excited to share and implement some of the explored methods.
Boorowa Netball Carnival
On the 25th October some of our Year 3-6 students participated in the Boorowa Netball Carnival. It was a brilliant opportunity for the students, playing five games over the day. Our students represented Campbell Primary brilliantly, as they worked collaboratively, encouraged one another and most importantly had fun! Under the leadership of Alistair Scherer, a very big thank you to the attending staff, Rachel Green, Kate Marley, Shanly Cheater and of course our volunteers Mia Ballet, Caitlin Weaver, Lorraine Rankin and Shane Cosgrove. A big thank you to Brenda Sebastian who spent many a lunchtime running practises for our students in preparation for the day.
Important Messages from the Front Office
Absence notifications
When advising the school of your child/ren's absence, either:
- phone the school on (02) 6142 3580,
- email campbellps@ed.act.edu.au, or
- use the Campbell Primary School mobile app.
Please don't use seesaw or email staff members directly regarding your child's absence as your message may not be attended to in a timely manner.
An important part of our transition into the new School Administration System (SAS) is sending SMS messages to inform of student absences.
Students who arrive after 9:00am will be marked as absent. The teacher will not amend the roll in the classroom. Your child will need to inform the front office of their arrival and wait patiently while their name is recorded in order to amend the roll correctly.
Should you receive an SMS message to let you know your child has been recorded as absent you can simply reply via SMS, with your child's name and the reason for your child’s absence and we will update our records. In your response/advance notification of absences, please include the student name, roll class, date of absence/s, reason for absence, period of absence (partial or full day), parent/carer’s name.
Semester 2 Reports
Continuing on from Semester 1, Semester 2 reports will be sent out via email. Please make sure the school has your current email address. Updates can be made by sending an email to campbellps@ed.act.edu.au, or calling us on (02) 6142-3580.
- Set the example. Let the children see you read.
- Have a collection of books in your home. Update this collection routinely to keep up with changing tastes and reading skills.
- Support our school's Book Fair. Allow your children to choose their own books to read.
The theme for our Scholastic Book Fair is Dino-Mite, where we hope you will Stomp, Chomp and Read!
It's a fun reading event that brings the books kids want to read right into our school. It's a wonderful selection of engaging and affordable books for every reading level. Please make plans to visit our Book Fair and be involved in shaping your child's reading habits.
Book Fair dates: 12th-14th November 2019
Shopping hours: 8:00-9:00am, 3:00-4:30pm
We look forward to seeing you and your family at our Book Fair! Remember, all purchases benefit our school.
Sincerely,
Paula Kinsman
Principal
The End of Year Whole School Concert will be on Tuesday, 17th December from 5:00pm for a 5:30pm start.
Bring along a picnic and blanket and enjoy the night of entertainment.
More information to come in Week 7.
The ACT Education and Training Directorate (the Directorate) has a duty of care and responsibility to ensure that adequate sun protection is provided for all students and workers, including pre-service teachers and volunteers. This applies while they are on school premises during school hours or undertakingoutdoor school activities when Ultra Violet (UV) levels are 3 and above.
In Canberra sun protection is required for part or most of each day between August and May. The end of May is ‘Hats Off Day’ whilst the beginning of August is ‘Hats On Again’ for all of us.
Students with no hat will be required to play in a well shaded area. This is informally known as ‘No Hat Play in the Shade’
UV levels reach 3 and above in Canberra for part or most of each day between August and May which warrants sensible sun protection during this part of the year.
