Dear Families,
Welcome to Term 1 2021. We would like to extend a warm welcome to our returning families and our new families who have joined us. We are looking forward to a wonderful year of learning and flexible play spaces. We would like to thank our community for their understanding and patience as we become familiar with our changing environment. More details about how we are catering to students during break times is included below. Please be aware that there may be minor tweaks as we assess supervision, line of sight and listen to student voice and feedback.
Staff changes
We would like to welcome Fiona McKellar into the role of Business Manager. Fiona is keen to establish positive relationships with students, staff and parents and is looking forward to getting to know our community throughout the year. Fiona brings to Campbell Primary School a wealth of knowledge and experience in working in the school environment.
With Fiona’s commencement at Campbell Primary School you may be asking “but, where has our beloved Donna gone”? Donna is currently on long service leave as she transitions into retirement. We are very excited for Donna as she embarks on new adventures but we cannot all help but feel a little lost without her presence.
Donna has been the beating heart of CPS since 2004 when she entered the school on a casual contract as a Learning Support Assistant. Throughout the years she progressed to office secretary and then business manager. She has welcomed and farewelled many families, principals, teachers and support staff in this time and has been the glue that has kept the school together.
There are truly no words or ways to measure the impact of Donna’s contribution to the Campbell community. She has been our supportive shoulder, adopted mum, resident gardner, fierce school advocate and of course an amazing professional colleague. Donna was the person who would stay late, work weekends and reschedule personal plans just to support the school. A person who went above and beyond. She even delayed her retirement so we didn’t have to manage through COVID 19 alone.
Donna has promised that she isn’t too far away and is planning to return to us regularly as a casual member of staff. We wish you all the best Donna and look forward to seeing you soon.
We are also pleased to announce that Kim Bland our building service officer has returned 4 days a week and Bill will continue to cover the other day until Kim returns fulltime.
Parent Open night and Building Information session:
Due to traffic management, COVID 19 restrictions and family access to different year groups, we have had to spread the sessions across the week. We appreciate this can be difficult for parents to attend multiple sessions due to work commitments and will make power-point presentations available to families online after the event.
Due to social distancing regulations for indoor venues we can only have one person per student attend the classroom. We are currently working with ACT Health to organise a QR code for all attendees to use the check-in CBR app. A paper sign in will be available for those without access to the app.
Monday 15 February: 3.30pm – 6.00pm (All families are welcome this is a drop- in session) |
Building Information session: This is a drop-in session where parents and community can come together to look at building plans and talk to directorate and construction staff. |

Playground Changes
We have been very lucky to have such beautiful weather in our first week back at school. Children have been working with their classroom teachers to become familiar with our new play areas and break times.
As mentioned in previous communication we have moved to split play breaks which are outlined below. We have worked with our P&C to ensure canteen and lunch orders are delivered to your child’s classroom at the relevant time.
9:00 Yuumma |
Recess Senior 10:30 - 11:00am Junior 11:00 - 11:30am |
Lunch Senior 1:00 - 1:30pm Junior 1:30 - 2:00pm |
Due to the changes in eating times, teachers have been adjusting their timetables to ensure students are not feeling hungry. Our senior children are now having fruit at noon and junior students are being encouraged to consume more food at recess time. We plan to provide more information to families during parent information nights after we have had a few weeks to trial different systems.
Play areas have also been adjusted as seen below. Teachers are using this week to take their students on boundary walks. We have been busy purchasing and allocating resources to different areas to ensure students have lots to do.
Thanks to Kim who is currently painting handball courts in our Handful of Happiness courtyard which will open as another area for students to play in during their breaks next week.
In the event of wet weather before school we are now asking that your child goes straight to their classrooms and not the school hall. Each classroom has an area outside where they can shelter from the rain. Classroom doors will be open at 8:45am unless we experience severe weather conditions. Teachers will discuss this with their students, however, we ask that you please remind your child of this new arrangement.

Message from the Defence School Mentor
Welcome to all of our new families; you have picked an excellent community for your children as we go through such an exciting time of change.
An extra welcome to our many ADF families who have come to us from all over Australia and internationally during what has been one of the most difficult posting cycles on record.
We are so glad you are here!
My role as the Defence School Mentor is to support students from ADF families through this transition period along with times of parental absence and when preparing for the next military move.
I am delighted to have the chance to extend support to all students both socially and emotionally from across our wider school community as well.
Should you have any questions or concerns about how your student is settling in please reach out either via your child’s teacher, directly at Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.au , or by phoning the front office.
