Jarrod Hoare - Japanese Performer - Years 3 to 6

T3W2_JH.jpg

Jarrod san visited Campbell Primary School, Years 3 to 6 students on Wednesday afternoon in Week 2. He was dressed in his gold kimono and haori (jacket) and his white toe socks (tabi). Jarrod san told us all that although he spent 7 years living in Japan training in the arts of traditional Japanese comic theatre (Kyōgen) and traditional comic storytelling (Rakugo), he was a boy from the Adelaide Hills and loved cricket and his footy!

Jarrod sat on his flat cushion (zabuton) and told comic stories in the traditional Kyogen and Rakugo style. He used only two props - a folding paper fan (sensu) and a hand towel (tenugui), and was able to use his acting skills and imagination to turn these two props into a number of imaginary items. Jarrod san invited some of the sensei up as volunteers to act, like charades, and the students had to try and guess what activity they were trying to show.

Jarrod san’s show was entertaining and engaging, and the students were able to learn some new Japanese words, and observe two new styles of traditional Japanese theatre culture.
