Dog Laws in the ACT

The map below describes off lease, conditional, prohibited and on leash areas for dogs.  For more information see recreation with my dog.  Dogs must be kept on a leash on public land in the ACT unless otherwise indicated.

Off Leash

Dogs are allowed off-leash in these areas but are still required to be under effective control at all times.

Conditional

Dogs can be off-leash in these areas as long as they meet the below requirements:

Sportsgrounds – Dogs are allowed off-leash when no formal sport or training is being played or conducted on the field or area. When sport or training is being conducted, dogs are prohibited to be on this field or area.

High School or Secondary College – Dogs are prohibited on school grounds during school hours or when school sport, including training, is being conducted. Dog owners also need permission from the Principal to have dogs on these grounds.

Playgrounds and barbeque areas – Dogs are prohibited within 10 metres when in use.

Prohibited

Dogs are not allowed in any area that is marked red and childcare centre, preschool or primary schools are dog prohibited unless dog owners have permission from the Principal.

Dog On Leash

Dogs must remain on-leash at all times in these areas.
