Campbell Primary School’s 60th Anniversary
Last Friday we enjoyed a ‘reimagined’ assembly, where students viewed photographs and artefacts, and heard stories about the local area and school’s past. It was wonderful to celebrate the history of not only our wonderful school, but also of our suburb and local community. The school and community that we are all a part of are a culmination of many years of history and people’s stories.
Did you know that the sandy banks of the Molonglo river, just down the road, were considered a significant place for meeting for the Ngunnawal people for many thousands of years? And that the expanse of 5000 acres of land surrounding our school, including the plains and the hills near the Molonglo River and in the Majura Valley, were given to Robert Campbell by the Australian Government in 1825? This was as compensation for the loss of his ships that were wrecked when he sent them to secure more food supplies for the small colony of people living near the, then flooded, Hawkesbury River.
The children and students alike had a great time learning about the history of our school and local area, as well as celebrating being a part of this incredible community!

Here’s a closer look at the ‘Wordle’ image (on the apron), which summarises perfectly what Campbell Primary School is all about.
