Kendo Demonstration at Campbell Primary School
As a culmination of the unit on Japanese traditional sports, 3 members of the ANU Kendo Club came to CPS to give a demonstration of kendo, a traditional martial art. ‘Kendo’ means ‘the way of the sword’, and it began as a safe way of training for the samurai, the ancient warriors of Japan’s feudal history. David Sensei, Darren Sensei and Jane Sensei explained their armour and their bamboo training swords, called ‘shinai’ and how to use them. David Sensei went through some training moves and how to score points in competition, and Jane Sensei and Darren Sensei finished the demonstration with a short match. They commended Campbell Primary students on their respectful audience manners, and their insightful and intelligent questions.
