Governor General of the Commonwealth of Australia visit

His Excellency General the Honourable David Hurley AC DSC (Retd) Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia

and

Her Excellency Mrs Linda Hurley

On Remembrance Day we were honoured to host Their Excellencies the Governor General and Mrs Hurley at Campbell Primary School.

Their visit started with a meet and greet with CPS school captains, Amelia and Harry who in turn welcomed Their Excellencies to 1G where all of the Year 1 students waited to sing for them. This was followed by Her Excellency Mrs Hurley sharing the story “ANZAC Ted” as well as several songs of her own. Mrs Hurley’s passion towards the benefits of singing as well as environmental sustainability were immediately evident and sparked lots of conversation on the topics.

His Excellency shared aspects of his own lengthy military service, the role of the Governor General in Australian culture, and his extensive Campbell local knowledge.

Following their Year 1 visit, Their Excellencies met with school vice captains Henry and Billie, Army Cadet Ethan, and Kindergarten students Lucas and Olivia, before taking a tour of the playground and answering as many questions as possible from the very excited crowd of students. His Excellency was pleased to discover he has in fact met many of our students and students’ families before!

The final stop for the visit was the new commemorative mural, officially dedicated that morning, for a few photos before taking their leave.

Student leaders were presented with special gifts to remember the visit.  The school was presented with Government House Christmas ornament which will be proudly displayed in the front office trophy case.

We would like to thank Their Excellencies for taking the time to visit as well as Captain Ben Turner and the Governor Generals’ team of staff for all of their behind the scenes work.  We would also like to acknowledge Miss Green for her exceptional efforts in preparing Year 1, and our students who were respectful and gracious to our special visitors.

We hope that Their Excellencies may visit again in the future!
