Language Competition Winners!
Taste of Languages Competition
The ACT Bilingual Education Alliance held a competition during Term 3 to promote multiculturalism and multilingual education and life in the ACT. Students needed to create a multicultural meal and document the preparation in video and written essay. The ACTBEA received entries from students from preschool to Year 11 from all over Canberra, and we are proud that Campbell Primary recorded 2 winners and a finalist.
Louise O and Dylan C from Year 5 received 2nd and third respectively in the Year 3 to Year 6 category, both receiving cash prizes, and Dashiell C from Preschool received a highly commended. Well done on your efforts!
ACT Primary School Calligraphy Competition
Calligraphy requires much practise and discipline - the fude must be held straight up and down, and the strokes of each character need to be created with the correct stroke order and pressure.
A large handful of students attended a lunchtime practice once a week for 6 weeks, which indicated their dedication and desire to improve their skills. Year 1 and 2 students were required to write the Japanese kanji character for ‘tree’ (木), Year 3 and 4 students were required to write the kanji for ‘moon’ (月 ), and he Year 5 and 6 students needed to write the character for ‘water’ (水 ).
Students could also enter a written hiragana category also, but most children chose to enter the brush and ink categories.
The following students practised hard and submitted their entries: (apologies if I have missed anyone who turned up intermittently for practice)
Year 2: Lachlan H
Year 3: Jiyan A
Year 4: Nevaeh RK, Jacqui H, Catelyn Mc, Sabrina FV, Amelia S, Emery S, Milai P, Lucas G, Scarlett LA.

Congratulations! I am sure the competition judges had a difficult time, as the standard that Campbell achieved was very high! Well done to all our students who participated.
We are very grateful for the expert assistance of both Aya O’Connell and Yuka Pham during our practice sessions - as native speakers, these ladies volunteered their time and shared their knowledge and skills in calligraphy.
Thank you for your help and patience - doumo arigatou gozaimasu!
