Message from the Defence School Mentor

Week 10! And not in the slightest how any of us thought we would be rounding out the term. All staff, students and families should be commended on their adaptability and flexibility as we all try to successfully navigate these difficult circumstances. It’s especially heartening to hear of families looking out for and supporting each other (from appropriate social distances of course). Some of our ADF families have been here for mere weeks and have not had the time to find a new hairdresser let alone build strong social supports. While we are a resilient bunch, true isolation is a real risk. So please keep checking in on each other over the fence, write letters, make a call, use the technology we have to stay connected. Who knows, we may come out of this with a much-expanded social and support network. Most importantly be kind to yourselves.

I wanted to remind our families that information and support for ADF families is still out there. If you haven’t checked it out yet, the website https://news.defence.gov.au/national/defence-response-covid-19 provides updated information on the Defence response to the crisis, as well as updated numbers of ADF infections. There is also a breakdown of where military members have been deployed to assist in the community. We thank those in our community who serve and thank them for their contributions to the wider Australian community both now and during the bushfire crisis. DCO, Soldier On and Open Arms have all adapted their support delivery models to allow for more remote connections with ADF members and their families. DFA have also released a special newsletter with some great information. If you are unsure of how to access these supports please email me at Karyn.heitmann@ed.act.edu.au.

Unfortunately, along with all other commemorative gatherings, our ANZAC Assembly will not be able to go ahead this year. We hope to include a few ANZAC activities in the lessons being planned for week 1 term 2, but we also encourage families to discuss and plan their own way to mark April 25th. We would love for all Campbell Primary families to display a paper wreath in their windows so we have attached a simple one that you can make at home. You will only require a printer, scissors and stickytape or glue. If you want to get more creative I’ve included a couple of ideas using recycled items from home, but there are many others out there! We would love to see what you have made and possibly include a few pictures in our term 2 newsletter, so please share pictures on your google classroom or email them to me. There is also the big National push to meet at dawn in our driveway to honour our veterans and active service people. Details are also included below.

I would like to wish all CPS families a happy, safe and healthy Easter.
