Sporting Schools - Ultimate Frisbee
Campbell Primary School are very grateful to again be the recipient of sporting schools funding for Term 1 2023, thanks to the Australian Governments’ $320 million Sporting Schools Initiative.
We are thrilled this term to welcome Josh from Gecko Sports to deliver a 4 week program of the exciting new sport of Ultimate Frisbee for Years 3 and 4. Josh brings an exceptional energy and lots of experience, and with his status as a member of the Raiders Development Group a bit of minor celebrity as well!
With elements of lots of different games the sport of ultimate frisbee has gained in popularity rapidly and will feature in the Brisbane Olympic Games in just a few years. It’s most unique feature? No umpires, referees, or officials! The sport is “self-governed” which means that each team are responsible for the regulation of the game. It requires a blend of cooperation, understanding, negotiation and communication. Students have taken to it incredibly well and we hope to see some of the newfound skills translated during minor disagreements on the playground and during lunch soccer!
So far students have learned back hand and fore hand frisbee throws, and a couple of different catching technique. The have also learned the various rules of the game and today were able to apply them to their first ever mini game! The strong winds added a level of challenge, but students did exceptionally well at having a go and the most impressive feature was how well they self-governed and the enthusiasm and fair play on display.
We are looking forward to some class vs class games in coming weeks AND possibly a teacher vs student show down later in the term! Watch this space.
