Deputy Principal's Report - 19 May 2022
The last couple of weeks have been a hive of activity at Campbell Primary School. With some of the COVID-19 health restrictions lifting we have had opportunities for families to return to the school site. It is starting to feel like a school community again.
Preschool Mother’s Day Celebration
Our Preschool team hosted their students’ mums or special person in their lives for a morning celebration. Our visitors spent the morning with their child, receiving a hand massage, manicure, reading stories, decorating crowns, and were entertained with a performance of Skidamarink Dinkee Dink.
Cross Country Carnival and Colour Run
Our first whole school event this year took place on Wednesday. The Cross Country Carnival and Colour Run were definitely a highlight this year. These events showcase how collaborative and encouraging our students are towards one another. We hope the students had as much fun as the CPS staff did and that all those colours came out of everyone’s hair. A big thank you to Al Scherer, Sarah Ebbage and Rachel Honner for organising this event.
On 3 June, North Gungahlin Cross Country Carnival will take place at Stromlo. Permission slips will be given out to our students that finished in the top five for their age group. We wish those students all the best of luck and our fingers are crossed that the weather is kind to you.
NAPLAN
Congratulations to our Year 3 and 5 students who over the last two weeks sat their writing, reading, language conventions and mathematics assessments. All the students were incredibly positive and despite some technical issues, persisted with their assessments.
Staff Planning Day (Pupil Free)
On Tuesday 17 May, we held the first of two Staff Planning days. The teachers utilised the day to prepare for a possible remote learning period, gathered in teams to create norms and routines when utilising the new learning environments.
Coming Up Events
P&C AGM and new building walk-throughs
On Monday 23 May, the P&C will be hosting a sausage sizzle, followed by their AGM and a walk through of the new buildings. Paula, Kate Herrington, Kate Stear and I will be available during those walk throughs to answer any questions. If you haven’t already, please reserve a ticket for this event through our Eventbrite link: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/agm-sausage-sticky-beak-at-campbell-primary-school-tickets-334187101617
National Simultaneous Storytime
On Wednesday 25 May, our school will be taking part in National Simultaneous Storytime. This event is held annually and is organised by the Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA). Every year a picture book, written and illustrated by Australians, is read simultaneously in libraries, schools and homes all over the country! This year, the chosen book is Family Tree, written by Josh Pyke and illustrated by Ronojoy Ghosh.
If you would like to read the book at home, please see the link: https://www.alia.org.au/nss
Nature Play Space
The last of our new play spaces will be unveiled on Friday. Next to the senior play equipment is our new nature play space (open to preschool to Year 6). This space houses new sandpits, large rocks and wooden steps and a water pump. The water pump will be an exciting addition to our play space which will be utilised in the warmer terms. Included in this space are several bike racks and a new sports shed. We can’t wait to see how the students utilise these spaces.
Campbell Primary School Cross Country Carnival and Colour Run
On Wednesday 18 May, the Campbell Primary School Cross Country was able to take place after last weeks’ rain delay. Excitement was high for the first full school sports event for 2022, with lots of house spirit and enthusiasm on display. We were also delighted to welcome back families to cheer on all of our amazing runners. Participation in the cross country event was very high and all of our budding athletes should be very proud of their efforts, with all contributing to their house point total regardless of where they finished.
The announcement of the winning house will follow at a later date, along with ribbon presentation. Information will be communicated to families advising of the presentation date and also for the regional carnival at Stromlo Forest Park, for those who have qualified, as soon as possible. Watch this space!
The formalities out of the way it was time to move on to Campbell Primary’s first ever colour run. What a tremendous amount of fun for all involved. We started with our Kindergarten to Year 2 group expertly mentored around the course by members of our Year 6 student leaders. Mr Holness, Ms Thane, Ms Nguyen and Ms Vicky did their best to make sure all runners were covered by as much colour as possible as students raced around the course (even if they ended up looking like a smurf or the Hulk themselves). Then it was the senior crew’s turn to run and they had a BLAST, right down to the very last drop of colour powder. We have a feeling that we will see the colour run back next year!
An enormous amount of work goes on behind the scenes to make these events such a success and we would like to acknowledge the effort and support of all staff in providing this fun and enriching opportunity for our CPS community. In particular we would like to thank Mr Scherer, Ms Ebbage and Ms Honner for their tireless planning, organisation and execution in both the cross country and brand new colour run events.
National Families Week is Australia’s annual celebration of the importance of families and the vital role that families play in community wellbeing.
While the official 20th National Families Week is being held this week (from 15 to 21 May), Campbell Primary School will be acknowledging Families Week throughout Week 7 (6 to 10 June).
So what’s happening in Week 7 to acknowledge our wonderful Campbell Families?
In Week 7:
Students will engage in a Families Week activity in their class.
Monday, 6 June:
Families will receive an email with a grid of suggested activities that you can do as a family. We would love you to send us any related photos to add to our Campbell Primary School Facebook page.
Friday, 10 June:
There will be a uniform free day for all students . We ask students to bring a gold coin donation. This donation will raise money for one of the National Families member organisations that do so much to help families across Australia.
A Buddies Lunch – All students will eat lunch with their Buddies to signify community spirit and connection because… “We are the Campbell Family”.
Our beautiful new grounds have meant that we can finally bring to fruition (pardon the pun) a long term goal of establishing a garden club for budding horticulturalists and environmentalists both!
Coordinated by the wonderful Learning Support Assistants Miss Vicky and Miss Jess we now have both a junior and a senior garden club running most days.
They have kicked off their first week by touring our new raised garden beds and fruit trees, planning future planting, looking at composting and worm farm options, and looking at practical ways to reduce our waste and environmental footprint at Campbell Primary.
Attendance has been very high and the enthusiasm is joyous to see.
Garden club is open to all students and new members are very welcome. Information about meeting places and designated days are in the morning notices each day.
We can’t wait to see what can “grow” from our newest club!

National Road Safety Week - 15 to 22 May 2022
This National Road Safety Week, 15 to 22 May, the ACT Government is joining the Safer Australian Roads and Highways (SARAH) Group to encourage the Canberra community to take the pledge to drive so others survive. However, as we know, road safety is everyone’s responsibility.
To remind children about staying safe on the road, Transport Canberra and City Services (TCCS) is running a colouring-in competition where children can win one of the activity tracker wrist watches. For more Information and colouring-in competition terms and conditions, go to National Road Safety Week from 15 to 22 May 2022 - City Services.

Our P&C works in a really mature, well-established framework, it’s fun and we get to make a difference to the school community.
Nominations are open for all executive positions (Pres, VP, Secretary and Treasurer), support positions (CASAC convenor, canteen and uniform shop) and of course we’d welcome standard committee members too. Nominations forms, as well as the constitution, by-laws and previous minutes are in the attached sharepoint folder:
Next Meeting - AGM - 23 May 22 Documents
We’ve proposed some minor amendments to the constitution and by-laws to provide some clarity and flexibility to the committee to be voted on: that doc is also in the sharepoint folder.
We’re hoping to see you all there for some community bonding over a sausage/gin, a snappy meeting to vote in the new committee that shapes the direction of the CPS P&C, and a brilliant opportunity to tour the new buildings.
